Re: 55-59 camaro clip with bigblock pics

I have a 56 sitting on a 78 c10 chassis with a BBC in it. I have spent a year mocking up this engine. I have a automatic with the shift on the column. I have not modified the firewall. I did change the steering column to a RV steering column that is very similar to the van column.

As far as engine bay room between the firewall and the radiator support, it is tight. I have a 67 chevelle 4 row radiator mocked up and I will have to run a short water pump setup. I will be running a electric fan since there is only 3.5" between the water pump and the radiator with a short water pump. The long water pump measures 1 5/8 between the radiator on the water pump.

This is only in mock up stage right now, but I am just before blowing it a part to clean up and paint everything under the hood and assemble it for the last time.

If you would like pics just let me know and I will take a few before I pull it apart.

Re: 55-59 camaro clip with bigblock pics

How low are you gonna go?
I built a 56 many moons ago but kept it stock height. Used an 80 gmc front frame that was grafted in place just in front of the body mounts.
Built it with a sbc and turbo 350.

Have you finalized your wheelbase?
You might gain an inch of room if needed.

Re: 55-59 camaro clip with bigblock pics

I upped my wheelbase an inch.
Nice thing is that deep engine bay.
Can’t tell by your pics but is your Camaro clip front or rear steer?
Front steer gives more room for bigger diameter headers.
I think front steer started about 1975.

My truck eventually got an 8-71 blown 427 in it. It’s in Smithers BC now.
Seeing your truck makes me wanna build another.

Re: 55-59 camaro clip with bigblock pics

I'm running the shorter valve covers so I have more room than you will. The headers are above the oil pan line. Starter fit OK but I had #8 tube moved out just to minimize heat. Plenty of clearance for motor mounts and steering shaft. I am running a remote oil filter - a shorty filter would have worked but oil changes would be a mess.

Re: 55-59 camaro clip with bigblock pics

Good afternoon, yes I did raise the motor mounts.

I used Patriot shorty headers for the exact reason you are having issues. I wanted to be able to determine the ground to exhaust clearance.

I didn't touch or alter the firewall.

I did use a two fan electric fan set-up the short water pump hub fits between the electric fan motors.

Feel free to ask more questions and enjoy the build pictures.

Yes they are Sanderson C5 - for '32 up cars. The C6 is for '55 Chevy pickup - when I talked to them (back in 2001) they said the two are essentially identical but the C5 has more ground clearance.

Who's p/s and alternator brackets are you using? You appear to be running the short water pump. I like the look of your p/s and alternator setup over the traditional BBC short water pump setup.

Its a long water pump. I started with a Alan Grove mid-mount alt bracket, flipped the alt up and used lower hole for a/c - then made the other brackets. The power steering pump bracket is Alan Grove also (I'm pretty sure - couldn't find the receipts and its been over 10 years) but I added the idler pulley because I didn't have a good way to tighten outer belt - and I don't like the belts hanging down (a/c belt also - plus concerned about not enough belt wrap on compressor pulley).

I'm thinking the hangs down further on "truck" headers is somewhat universal. The set for the small block I had in my 71 hung down far further than they needed to and while great on a stock 3/4 ton two wheel drive would never work on a lowered half ton.
