How do you document your build

Curious to know what people are using to document their build. For my build I am using Dave Spacey's Project Book. Only about 25% into my project but it has already come in handy more than once.

I stuff my receipts in it
That way I know where they are.

I have thought about writing a descriptive before, but I have always remembered those details when telling people about it. I remember most details about the trucks I've done, but a written record would be good. Every truck is it's own story. That's for sure.

I take pictures, save any receipts and paperwork, instructions, and take notes.

So far my photos have been the biggest help when looking back at anything I need to look into. One thing about the pictures I take are the small details...

Part numbers, casting numbers, hard to see areas, wiring, modification photos especially.


For the most part my builds are ongoing so my documentation does help me between the times I get back into working on my vehicles.

Do you mean document, or are you referring to planning?

I am curious what other people use for planning.

I use google sheets for planning. It's nice that I can access it from anywhere, on any device. Documentation is a combination of marking what of the plan is complete, along with any notes, in google sheets and trying to keep my build thread alive here. I look at my build thread as an opportunity to give back information that I consume from the fine folks here. In the end, the real documentation is in the final product itself.

I regret not creating spread sheets with GM part numbers from my NOS pieces that could be used for future reference.

Build threads here I encourage because they may help others down the road if nothing else.

Interesting to hear how everyone documents their build. Besides the Stacy's project book I also took a bunch pictures. Unfortunately I've been changing things so much most of them don't help as I'm putting it back together.

I do use an Excel spreadsheet to track my costs. Also, use it to figure out which parts I need to order. I'm glad my wife is technology challenged so she can't see how much I am spending!!

That’s exactly the reason mine isn’t in a spread sheet, she know how to use a computer pretty good!

Oh and do it for two project trucks. Twice the project four times the money.

Yep...detailed Excel spreadsheet and pics saved on the PC. The spreadsheet helped several times in avoiding duplicate purchases, and for buying replacement parts.

Much the same here. I began with catalogs from most of the vendors and determined what I needed in an excel workbook (with a sheet for each major category, like exterior, interior, drive line, etc). After that I began buying parts, eBay and this site for NOS stuff, vendors for other stuff. After about a year I had most everything. Before tear down I took a lot of pictures and notes. When the tear down started I continued to take pictures and notes, bagged and or labeled everything possible with shipping tags. Sent all applicable parts to paint, powder coat, replating, etc. Tear down to test drive was a little over 4 months. Good luck, Lee

Writing a manual, pictures, part lists & illustrations. I can cite 10 aspects to a bolt if it suits.

I approached it as someone who knew nothing about anything, which was an accurate description

Thought I would bump this one.

So I now expanded on how I document by build. I using the following methods:
-Dave Stacy Project book
-Pictures from when I disassembled everything
-Spreadsheet to document cost and part numbers
-White board to help ID what I need and HAVE.

Folders for receipts.
Folders for internet/research related printed info for reference material.
Various website forums in the 'Projects/Builds' section for images/info.
Spiral notebooks for info, pricing, part-numbers, & calcs.

I try to obtain the notebooks/folders/spirals in the color of the vehicle being done so it's easier to see/ID with multiple projects. My dually stuff is in Red. 64 stuff in green. The 99 in white. The Malibu in blue. Most of the 67 stuff is in black binders now since it's referred to as the Mole.

An album and posts on Facebook, a flash drive just in case the computer were to crash or something like that, a photo album, a bankers box with old parts catalogs and magazines and, a folder with a clipboard.

Lots of pictures on the computer ,cloud and a stick drive . Have lost some prior not backing them up . Keep all receipts. Last couple I've bought were ready to go so nothing really to document

Every other receipt gets thrown away instead of recorded. Just makes me feel better about the $ spent!!!

Notebook with description,part number,cost and where I got it. Entered by month and year with running total. Guess I'm old school lol.
