Tailgate looks different

Just found an original stamped tailgate for my 72 GMC fleetside but part of the stamping looks a little different on the inside. I was told it was from a 68. I don’t think it should matter but you tell me or answer why it is. The stamped line at the top of this picture has a break in it for approx 4”. My tailgate now has that line solid from bottom to top of the gate. Any ideas ? See pic below. The second picture is to just show you the gate. Pretty good shape I’d say for its age and being a Canadian gate! Got it for $200cdn

Re: Tailgate looks different

I think there was 3 variations from 67-72. Just small differences like you pointed out. They should all inter-change. Such as your gmc gate is 69-72 with the big letters.

Thanks. Yeah I don’t think it matters but thought I would ask.

Re: Tailgate looks different

That's a 1968 GMC gate, there's lots of information on the forum about it. There was a gate for 67, 68, and 69-72. That's a good find and worth quite a bit more than you paid for it. Those one year only gates are hard to find

Yeah I knew it was a stinkin good deal!! That’s only $150 US for an original stamp with no rot or bondo from what I can tell. Neat they are so rare as well.

Re: Tailgate looks different

Ok now I’m confused. Not with the speedbump in the stamping but with the lettering. Reading through other threads I’m reading that the difference in lettering size and band tells you something as well. I’m reading 68 has smaller lettering but compared to other gates this one appears to have larger band and letters. Can anyone confirm this for me ?

Re: Tailgate looks different

I didn't know '68s were different. I thought they were the same as '67, small letter.

Re: Tailgate looks different

Tim, you are correct with 67-68 being small letter gates.

Re: Tailgate looks different

And you were right stating this tailgate is a 69-72. Somewhere in there it was being said this was a '68 gate, then Canadian C15 got focused on the letter size. So it's confirmed correct for his '72.
