Fuel sending unit
So I went to install my new sending unit and there wasn't a gasket. I can't remember if the original had a gasket or not. Does anybody's day know if they're supposed to come with one or do I have to purchase or make my own? Doesn't seem right that it would just be metal n metal between the tank and unit? ????

Re: Fuel sending unit
It for sure has a gasket.
https://www.chevsofthe40s.com/dept/F...ding+Unit.html Short run for you but I'd call and make sure they had it. The same gasket fits 47/66 trucks plus a few. https://www.classicheartbeat.com/pro...g-unit-gasket/ Wes doesn't deal in stuff back past 47.

Re: Fuel sending unit
it's a thin cork or paper gasket, easy to make if you can get your hands on gasket material
what ever you do... don't use silicone or rtv, they don't play nice with fuel pickups

Re: Fuel sending unit
For sure on not using silicone or rtv sealer on the tank. I spent a day cleaning worms of one or the other out of the fuel lines on someone's rig about 30 years ago when they decided that they could seal up around the gauge sender or pickup tube on a gas tank. Then they towed it the shop where I was working because it quit on the side of the road. We pulled long strings of the stuff out of the fuel line and then blew the lines out and did a lot of cleaning. I think the guys quick cheap fix cost him about 300 bucks in labor plus a new fuel pump and the right gasket for the tank sender.

Re: Fuel sending unit
Thanks all. I'm not sure why one wasn't delivered when I purchased this from Brothers. My life cal Napa had a rubber one in stock. I installed the sending unit in the tank, installed the tank, put seat back in and started on the wood bed today. It's all temp'd in and holes marked for drilling. Stain is next and final re-install soon...then finally done.

Re: Fuel sending unit
FWIW many hardware stores carry sheets of nitrile material. If you're up for a DIY gasket this is a far superior choice to most gaskets made for vintage vehicles. And it will last longer if you use fuel with ethanol.

Re: Fuel sending unit
Sorry for the slow response. Yes I am using a stock tank and my local Napa had the gasket I needed. I actually thought about making my own but for $6 the decisions n was made for me. All is well now. Thank you.

Re: Fuel sending unit
Off topic but I see you’re from Battle Ground.
I was planning on going to this cruise in tomorrow but the weather isn’t looking too good. Maybe next year https://www.facebook.com/events/246178050543224/

Re: Fuel sending unit
Yes from BG. I hadn’t heard of this and it looks like it’s supposed to be 79 or so with some clouds. I may go with my wife. Thanks for the heads up.

Re: Fuel sending unit
Looks like the rain is gone but I see 66 for today. Unfortunately I decided to have the clear bra redone on my running boards, so I won’t be able to take my truck.
