I need to Identify this
I need to Identify this
ok i bought this 72 fleetside from a guy, he dont know what the motor size is. he says its a 86 crate motor. the #'s on the block say its a 350 as to chevy e-mail page. but guys I needed to buy a starter for it one time in the dead of winter, the 350 didnt mount because of hole pattern. is there a way to exactly know without tearing down the motor and checking cylinder bore size??. this sounds real bad but I cant identify what I have,, any help please |

There are two different small block chevy starters that I know of. One has the two holes lined up, the other has them on an angle. You probably have the wrong one. A small block is a small block pretty much. Look whats on the block, straight holes or angled holes.

2 years ago I sent them numbers to mortech, they said they would look into it because at the time they haddent seen them numbers, I told them it has stamped in the block made in mexico in it and I wanted to know what the real year was on the block, well they never replied and now on their page they show the numbers I asked about, but they show no year on the numbers, makes me suspicious that I sent them the numbers and they added the numbers to thier list and went with that.. NO I dont know but I have looked and e-mailed Mortech about this. I just still dont know what this block is.. is there a way to tell without ripping the darn thing down to find out is it a 350 or a 305??

Does not matter as to engine size(262-267-305-307-327-350-400) as there are only 2 starters-one fits small flywheel -153 tooth-one fits large flywheel-168 tooth. You have angled bolt pattern so swap for straight bolt pattern.

Most all blocks have the 3 bolt holes. You can use either starter on all blocks. The flexplate or flywheel dictates which one.

The three holes he was talking about was for the manual transmission starter. for 67-72 then the starter bolts to the bellhousing for MT instead of the block. Bolts to the block on AT.
Is it a MT '72? If so, don't mention a thing about the engine being an '86, just tell them '72 pickup, 350 and a MT. They will get it right.
