Which aftermarket fuse box should I buy for my 87

I need a little help deciding which fuse box I should buy for my 87. I don't think getting a used one from the junkyard is right for me. The new ones you can buy seem like you'll have an easier time and a somewhat better experience.

But which one? Is there one that is know for being the best? I just didn't want to get one and find out later that I should've got this other thing. So any recommendations here would be very helpful. I'm going to wire up some new headlights and I'd like plenty of extra slots for adding things. Thanks!

I have only done 5 wiring jobs, and all have been universal kits, and I have been a electrical + hvac tech most of my adult life.

3 of the universal kits were in hot rods. Easy peasy. No other choice, and nothing to mod.

1 was in a F1 for my dad's friend, and it was annoying. But he had a fuel injected motor, and electric fans.

My last one was my 69 Camaro, and it was a faith worse then death. I saved $900 on my universal kit, and I would gladly pay the $1200 twice over for a proper kit now.

What ever brand you buy. Spend the money, and buy a made for version. I believe Painless will custom your kit to fit things you changed or plan to change.

$1200 or so is alot of money, but done in 2 days is a blessing that is hard to understand. Till your in the purgatory of universal, and needs to be fitted.

Of course let's not completely diss a universal kit. If you make enough changes it honestly is a damn fine option, but takes work.

I really don't need all the wires and accessories that the other kit comes with. Nor do I need to to look like a factory piece. I just want a modular fuse/relay block so I can add more later if necessary. I guess I could just get one that has a lot of extra ones. I was hoping someone here had one that was the "go to".

I thought that might be what you were asking in your original post but wasn't certain. It sounded like you were leaning towards OEM style.

Here is what I have used with great satisfaction from Blue Sea:

I particularly like the negative buss which is handy for adding miscellaneous accessories later. Blue Sea is best known for providing electrical solutions to the marine industry and it's been my experience their quality exceeds what is necessary for automotive and is priced reasonably. They have a gigantic array of options so if what I've linked doesn't seem right do check out what else is available. If I were to do it again I'd purchase the fuse block which has separate banks for ignition switched vs constant battery +. I added an additional smaller block to handle that but it would have been slightly neater and more compact to do it in a single block.

I have used blue sea on my pontoon boat, they make nice stuff imo. Only thing is I was hoping to get one that had a bunch of relay slots too. Something like 6 or 8 open relay holes would be good. I need 2 for the headlights, and a few more for other things I want to add later.

Would automatic windows going to battery require their own relay for each window? I'm an electrical newb.

I would also like to hide a small winch, and maybe a few other things. So I think that one may not have quite enough relays for me. But maybe I should just daisy chain something else onto it, if I need more? I thought that someone would sell one that had 6 or 8 relay slots available, along with plenty of fuses.
