Carter AFB Intake ?

I would like to install the Carter AFB in place of the 2GV that I simply can’t get to run properly. Can anyone please tell me what intake to try to locate ? Also would the original linkage function or do you need to replace it ?…thanks

The edelbrock performer intake is a good all around manifold. There are a lot of used ones around for decent prices. It can be used with square bore (AFB-Holley)or spread bore (Q-jet) carbs.

^ Yup. You might have to sort through the throttle lever volume/kickdown cable geometry (if you have an automatic), but just look at the Edelbrock carburetor adapters at Jeg's or the like.

Thanks guys ! it was mounted on a Performer before I got it. I just didn’t know if there was any other options. I hate to loose my original air cleaner set up because it has the provisions for pre heat and 1/2 the PCV system. But I have had it with the 2GV and the divorced choke. I pulled the AFB off a pickup I parted out and figured I would try it out …appreciate the input..Jack

I look at it this way!
Not to be too harsh but if you can’t get a 2GV to run right then you’ll pull all your hair out working on that afb!

They’re a good carb but need attention to float level, float drop, jets and metering rods, secondary air door, fuel pressure and fuel percolation.

If you can’t get the divorced choke working to optimum then find or convert yours to a manual choke.
I’m assuming the choke set up is your problem.

V8 or L6?
Either case Throttle Cable control is 100% better.

A Carter AFB is mechanically identical to the later Edelbrock Performer series.
Edelbrock carb kit EDL1477 works on it
A Carter AFB 9635S = an EDL 1405. [600 CFM/ MAN'L CHOKE].
I find them much easier to tune than Holleys or Rochesters.

I say performer intake as well but some times you need a base plate made for the square bore on that intake since it has the q-jet bolt pattern as well if not sometimes it will leak I put sometimes in there cause every now and then I have had regular square bore gaskets not leak.
Also the Carter AFB and Edelbrock are great street carbs just be aware that the main problem is needle and seat issues and most all of that can be fixed with a regulator to dial the fuel pressure down below say 5.5 or 5 PSI , AND a good filter close to the inlet like a see thru glass one. Jim

Good point about the fuel pressure regulator. I never had problems with my E-brock copies of the AFBs, but many people have.

I have a 600 CFM Carter AFB on my V8 350 in the '71 GMC Jimmy,[w/ mech fuel pump]. I had a Holley Fuel Pressure Regulator on it. A machanic said I didn't need it , so we took it off. Still have it in a drawer if ever needed again.
The 500 CFM Edelbrock 1404 on my .030-over 292 L6 in the '68 C/10 Stepside [and mech fuel pump] never had excess fuel pressure problems so no regulator needed.

I have read that the 2GC series carbs are very difficult to tune properly compared to QJets, I tend to agree ! I sent it to USA Carb in Philly because they said we do them often. Mikes Carburetor seems to be the go to guy on them today. The Carter was mounted on a Performer on a 350. It ran good before the truck was parted out . I ran it out of gas and stored it in plastic so hoping it will run agin without all the drama.

I have a Carter AFB 9635S 600 CFM manual choke on a Weiand intake on my 350 crate motor. An Offy Spreadbore/Squarebore adapter and a 1'' phenolic anti-heat spacer make it work in my hot environment. The 600 CFM AFB is close to an EDL-1405, and I use the Edelbrock Performer Series Carburetor Manual for tuning.
For ReCarb kits, [oddly] Holley sells an AFB kit for $43.81 [p/n 510-37-1555] at Jeg's.
