Ididit Retrofit vs Universal column
What's the difference between the retrofit and universal?
The Retrofit is $150 more and a long wait time. I will be installing this in a 64 Suburban with No limit rack and pinion and LS swap.

Looks like the retro is 2" diameter and 3/4-36 on the lower shaft. The universal is 2 1/4" diameter and 1" DD shaft. So it may just be a matter of how the 2 1/4" fits against the dash.

Re: Ididit Retrofit vs Universal column
I have used both styles, the universal fit will function with a bit of tweeking, the other will fit easier in the mounts…don’t worry about the end of shaft connection, there are ujoints that will simplify it for you

Re: Ididit Retrofit vs Universal column
I haven't been able to verify this myself, but I've had a couple of people whom I did steering wheel restorations and a couple of others relay to me that the universal column requires using the horn kit with aluminum ring (or other transition kit) to fill the gap between the barrel end of the column and the back of the steering wheel.

Good info, I plan to use a stock steering wheel if I can. Sounds like this plus the fact the 2" diameter will fit better against the dash will make me spend a little more $$. I had to make a few custom parts to fit the stock wheel of my 51 pickup onto the Ididit column which was a pain. So I think it's worth the extra cost.

Re: Ididit Retrofit vs Universal column
I think vin63 is correct on the ring spacer for one of the tweeks, column diameter was another and if I remember correctly, where the wiring exits the column was another….all doable, just can be frustrating, doing it yourself would just be your time, paying shop rates for this would make the $150 cheap….

Re: Ididit Retrofit vs Universal column
I'm looking at the same column (also with a No Limit rack) and also want to use my stock wheel. Ididit's website states that "A stock 1960-66 wheel can NOT be used with a 1960-66 ididit column"
Any insight on this?

First thing I did with my retro column was to test fit the steering wheel. It fit without any problem and all I had to do was order the aluminum spacer ring. |
