i have a brass slug or flatten a copper pipe for plug welding holes

I think I have had that one on my wish list for a while. I'd say that the first hole in a firewall that you use it to back up while you weld the hole up will pay for it. I've got the spoon type one that I got off Ebay but unless you can reach around to hold it or have a helper it isn't all that great.

I'd have to go out and count them but have something like 30 holes that my uncled drilled in the box of my 71 GMC to weld up. I went out and looked and there 16 holes in the drivers side of the box to weld up 12 being on top and 4 for the J hooks and probably 17 on the passenger side as my uncle drilled a hole from the inside through the inner panel and the outer panel to bolt a small tool box inside the bed at the back. I remember Dad buying him a 3/8 drill for Christmas one year.

For years I've used a block of steel that's roughly 1" thick and 4" square. I've also used cast iron as a backer. That tool above would be nice to have.

cool tool, I shouldda had one when it was firewall time, lol. I have several flattened copper pipe pieces of different shapes and contours and a thick piece of brass that takes longer to heat up
it should come with a step drill so the old hole can be cleaned up to bare metal and sized for the round slug to fit well. that way you don't have to custom fit every filler slug, just drill the hole to fit the slug. welders series sells "unholes" for cheap, prolly others do too. I sometimes use a magnet to hold the slug due to no helpers. it only works for the tack because the magnetic field distorts the weld and then there is porosity to grind out and re weld. tack, remove magnet, hammer/dolly to get flat, tack again, hammer/dolly......you know.
I have used a regular uncoated nail sometimes. it has a nice shank to hold while you weld, then cut that off when done. the shank helps absorb some heat too
I have a C clamp that I cut off so it is only 1/2 a C. it has a magnet attached to the cut off part so it can stick to the surrounding metal and not distort the weld so much, then the threaded part can be screwed down to fit whatever height you need. it has uses as well.

I moved it because it was tool related and others from different forums might see it and think the same thing, "I could use one of those" or "Hey, that's cool." Therefore, it's shared with the rest of the community.

I got mine today. It looks like it's made pretty well. For $15 I don't think it would be worth my time to build one. I'll try it out this coming week.

After we hashed over that I went on Amazon and ordered one and found out that I had exactly enough Amazon points to pay for it with nothing out of pocket.

I really like this addition to my Welding Tools.

The small screw on the Copper end is M4 metric/ Thread.

The other articulating side is M8 /Thread.

I am already planning to make attachments.
