No, my orange/white Super left Flint with a black GB door. It seems to me the Fremont Supers had body color GB doors but I've not tried to quantitate that.

Re: 1972 Super Glove box door QUESTION

Here is a Cheyenne Super door I had years ago. I wish I had gotten an upclose picture of the VIN, I think I sold it to a board member though so it may be around yet.

Just a quick note - a 72 GMC Super Custom and a 72 Chev Cheyenne Super are very different trim levels, so perhaps not a relevant data point for the OP's question. Super Custom equivalent for Chev is the Custom Deluxe in 72, two trim levels below the Cheyenne Super. Is your whole GB door black with no woodgrain (and matches the dash gauge bezel also in black)? - or can you share a picture of the dash and the SPID? Should be a Z62 vice YE9 I believe.

There’s a thread or two about these black doors if I’m not mistaken. I’ll dig. Meanwhile, here’s an example of that on my k20.

Re: 1972 Super Glove box door QUESTION

Wonder if the black color relates to a parchment interior on trucks from certain plants such as Flint, St Louis,..?

I was wondering the same. Your truck was Flint truck with a black door... One of the Cheyenne Supers I have is also Flint (2F31xxxx) truck with parchment interior...but NOT a black glovebox door. So for Flint it appears to be a crapshoot on what color glovebox door was installed on a parchment interior? Edit: mine was built in fall of '71. See post 14 for more details.

The last picture is another truck of mine...a late-'72 St. Louis Cheyenne Super that has parchment interior and a black door.

Some questions on my mind:
-For trucks that weren't painted black, are there any examples of a black glovebox door for an interior other than parchment? I'm thinking you at least had to have a parchment interior to have any chance of receiving a black glovebox door.
-Are there any examples of a St. Louis truck with parchment interior that doesn't have a black glovebox door?

Re: 1972 Super Glove box door QUESTION

After looking through the definitive Cheyenne Super thread...here are some theories I have:

1) All Fremont (Z code) Cheyenne Supers had body-color glovebox doors regardless of interior color. Can anyone provide an example proving otherwise?

2) All St. Louis (S code) Cheyenne Supers with parchment interior received a black glovebox door. Can anyone prove otherwise?

3) For Flint (F code) YE9 with parchment interiors, black glovebox doors potentially became standard around March of '72...this is comparing some of the serial numbers to the build date thread. Proof otherwise?

4) All remaining factories had body-color glovebox doors regardless of interior color.

Flint examples are attached.

So 2F352xxx has a body color glovebox door. And 2F356xxx (post #14) has a black glovebox door. Both were March '72 builds. Every other Flint example I've been able to find implies the change was made sometime between those two serial numbers. Now I'm really curious if that can be disproven...

Re: 1972 Super Glove box door QUESTION

Here my 72 GMC Sierra Grande 2500 glove box door. Built in St. Louis and sold new in Colorado. It also has the black door with parchment trim listed. I thought it was weird that the dashpad, steering column, and wheel are also black instead of the light tan color that standard parchment trucks had. Door panels, and visors are parchment.

do you also think there's a correlation between this, and the A/C side vents? Some are body color while others are black.

Re: 1972 Super Glove box door QUESTION

interesting. then it really is looking like there simply is no reason why either the glove box or a/c side vents were painted whatever color. I certainly feel a painted glovebox looks far better than the black; that just looks unfinished, IMO

Re: 1972 Super Glove box door QUESTION

Another thing I've noticed is that I've only seen black gb doors on ochre, orange, or "maybe" red trucks. Haven't seen it on any others, regardless of plant. In the two pics I posted above, I don't know if the first pic with black door is red or hugger orange. The 2nd pic with red door is indeed a 514 red primary color truck - my all time favorite swb big block bucket am/fm Super on the planet, sameyrasmea's...

I've been trying to figure out this oddity for a while. I've asked friends of mine that are into these trucks as parts collectors/sellers, and restoration shops. One of them has never seen any of these. The other says he believes GM had a surplus of black cheyenne super glove box doors painted black and they just sent them to various plants to use them up. Personally I don't think that is the reason. I don't have a good answer as to why these are this way though. I used to think it was plant specific too. Everything pointed to Flint and Janesville plants sending these out. Here's a St.Louis one, my GMC is a Flint, and I have a Janesville one that is on a medium red truck.

Here are a couple examples of black cheyenne super doors on non orange and red trucks. First is a grape whine/yellow and white K20 I've been trying to buy for years. The guy just wants too much for it. The 2nd is my 72 GMC in medium olive.
