Quick question - original '64 V8 alternator location?

I've been searching around, looking at gallery pics, and such trying to determine on which side of the engine an original V8 alternator was mounted. Driver or passenger side? My searching was inconclusive. Any help?

Re: Quick question - original '64 V8 alternator location?

From my stock '64...the bottom of the alternator lower bracket bolts into the forward facing boss on the drivers side exhaust manifold and the water pump. The top slide bracket bolts into a special boss on the intake and I've found out by looking at the Lambrech auction pics that the top bracket actually went behind the ear on the alternator but this pic is from back before I knew that. Edit: these were short water pump engines but many have been converted to long pumps which allowed the alternator to be moved to the passenger's side. This is often done in conjunction with headers since that causes the loss of the exhaust manifold mounting boss.

Re: Quick question - original '64 V8 alternator location?

Exactly what I needed to know, thanks to you both.

My truck has an early '80s 305 in it, long water pump, and with headers. The alternator is on the passenger side. I need to replace all the wiring, and was unsure on whether I needed to convert to driver's side mount. Looks like I'll definitely need to leave it where it's at and get replacement front harness to suit the passenger side mount.
