Fuel tank and pump location

I have been working on fuel lines for a month after work. The tank is installed under the frame rails. In the pic you can see it has a top suction type fuel outlets. I installed high pressure fuel line to the filter about 18 inches away, then a high pressure fuel pump. The fuel pump is inside the frame rail and higher then the tank. The fuel line then turns to steel line all the way to the TBI. Is this going to work? I dont know how i can get the fuel pump lower then without mounting the fuel pump under the frame rail and four feet away.

Might need to check the pump specifications...

Certain pumps need to be close to the fuel source as they have less of suction ability.
If your pump needs to be lower than the fuel source, an in-tank style may be a better bet or a pump designed to work as you have yours mounted.

I too would chase an in-tank pump version. What is the tank out of?

The pump is a Walbro GSL 392 pusher type which I did not know mattered. The tank I think is out of a 80s El Camino. It is an under trunk or bed mount with side fill. If I didnt have enough trouble wiring the TBI 350, now I have to redo the fuel system

You should be able to get that same tank within tank pump. I thi k it was 86/87 when the tbi came into the el camino also

At 5 feet away from the tank I would below the tank. Would that work?

This. You are so much better off with an in-tank pump. Quieter. Available at any parts store in the US. Might have a baffle if you got the tank for an EFI one but the sending unit likely fits either way. Very little wiring to re-do. Unless you have a really built engine the factory pump will be more than adequate.

EDIT-looks like an early ElCamino tank. There is an FITech tank for those with an in tank fuel pump available.

Thanks for the help. The later tank is wider so that wont work. The FItech is 600, so not really in my budget. In my search for 1990 tanks I found an S10 Blazer tank that might work. Only 29 inches wide and has in tank fuel pump. Anyone done a Blazer tank under the bed on a C10?

The s10 tanks fit well,but are only 16 or 19 gal.

I put a Blazer tank in my '67 C10 with an external fuel pump. I mounted my pump on the frame crossmember just in front of the tank
I did put a loop in the line between the tank and pump. Did that to prevent the fuel from being siphoned back into the tank. Been working good for me.

I mounted my filter/regulator close to where you have yours. I had to move it as the exhaust/muffler almost touched the regulator. Just depends on what you have in mind for exhaust.
It took me forever to get my tank installed and working like I wanted. It's a major engineering accomplishment when it's installed and working correctly.

I was just looking under my 49 Merc and that is how I did it to run my TBI 305.
It is a little further up the frame rail because the kit I used said nothing about how far away the pump needs to be only that it was lower then the tank.
It is about 4 feet from the tank and I primed the fuel line when I assembled it.

When you are doing something factory, it is just putting something back the way you found it. Custom is a lot of thinking and researching and talking to others to find out what they did. Sometimes you just have to try and fail

If your fuel pump is a pusher then it has to be close to the tank and most recommend near the top of the tank. If its a puller than anywhere will work fine. I use a holley blue as I have a carb so mine is about mid way down the tank and right beside it. I use nylon fuel line and run it inside the frame rail so the exhaust wont bother it.

Something to consider is at some point the filter will have to be changed and the pump replaced. A bit of planning now will make those chores easier. But, I am assuming your going to have a bed and not remove it for filter servicing.

If I was where you are now I would toss some plywood on the frame and crawl underneath and survey the serviceability what I was creating.

I used an '86 S10 Blazer tank in a '72 SWB when I did a TPI conversion for a guy about 20 years ago. It fit pretty well. He put a later bed on it as was the trend at the time and moved the filler to that side. Actually used the Blazer fuel lines on that one too.
