My 1986 K20 came with a carburetor, my 1988 K20 Suburban came with TBI. 1987 was the first year of TBI.

Re: Did 1986 squarebodys ever come with TBI ?

No.

'86 was carbed.

'87 was the first year for TBI in a square.

The original direction was to introduce it on the GMT400 models but management decided it was too much risk to do an all new truck and an all new powertrain in the same year.

They elected to pull TBI ahead to get some (more limited) field exposure prior to the release of the new truck.

Starting 1/1/87 did the squarebodies have EFI? When would have been the cutoff?

Model year 1987. Each model year went on sale sometime the previous year, in the same way it happens today.

Model year starting in September of '86.

My '87 R10 was built 9/29/86. That was a Monday, second shift (I left it at the shipping building Tuesday 9/30/86 at about 1 am).

Did the 1988 gmt400 trucks go into production earlier in the year than normal? I thought I've heard that the 1987 model year production and/or sales was cut a little shorter because of the body style change.

Re: Did 1986 squarebodys ever come with TBI ?

I don't recall that being the case.

My recollection was that the GMT400's were introduced in a normal cadence.

There was the whole R/V/C/K rollout through 1991 so that tends to confuse things (it was really confusing at the time and it's really confusing now, even though I was there).

For a while we had both an 89 pickup and a 91 Suburban.

But the 91 Suburban was actually "older" than the 89 pickup
