5spd from a 95 into a 85
I have a line on a 5spd in a 95 4x4 . I was wondering how difficult it would be to install in my 85 the 85 has a 700r4 with a 208 transfer . Pretty sure the 95 has a hydraulic clutch but not sure of anything else . Easy to do or a big chore ?

Re: 5spd from a 95 into a 85
Is the 5-speed an nv3500(aluminum case with integral bellhousing) or a nv4500(iron case with a bolt-on bellhousing)? The nv4500 is the better-regarded transmission of the two. The fitment is identical between the two. Same length, same shifter location, same output splines, etc.
1995 is the last year with the low-mount passenger-side slave on the nv4500. This slave comes uncomfortably close to the squarebody passenger-side front driveshaft. If you have a sizeable lift on the truck, the risk of colliding the driveshaft with the slave is lessened. A 92-95 nv4500 can be easily fitted with a 5.125" Advance Adapters bellhousing to move the slave to the driver's side. A 92-95 nv4500 can also be modified to fit a sm465 bellhousing, since both have the same 5.125" center bore. The nv4500 face needs to be drilled and tapped for rearward facing bolts, if you do this. The nv3500 doesn't have a removable bellhousing, so you can't easily move the slave out of the way of the front driveshaft. From 1996 to 2007, the nv4500 used an internal slave, so the driveshaft clearance problem doesn't exist. I don't know when or if the nv3500 switched to an internal slave. It was likely around 1996, but I can't guarantee that. Aside from the slave location problem, you'll also have a spline count mismatch on the np208 transfer case. The np208 was available with two different input shafts. It could be had with a 27-spline shaft when bolted to a 700r4 like yours. It also could have come with a 32-spline shaft. You'll need the 32-spline input shaft in order to bolt that np208 to either the nv3500 or the nv4500.

So it’s not all that bad . See what I can get the trans for I believe it’s the 4500 but until I look at it I won’t be positive .

The piece in the transfer case that needs to be changed,
Can be purchased at Torque King used. Link: https://torqueking.com/product/55500...e-input-shaft/ Or if you have or can find a 208 that was behind a SM465. It will have the 32 splined input shaft.

Re: 5spd from a 95 into a 85
Do you have the parts to convert to a clutch pedal? Then there's the linkage, etc. or hydraulic master and slave to operate the clutch. Do you have a flywheel and clutch? Is there a hole in the crank machined for a pilot bearing?
There are lots of questions when moving from an auto to a manual so I'd say it's not so easy. |

To the OP -- There's several different routes you could go on clutch linkage. One option is to use the 73-84 mechanical clutch pedal and related linkage. Another option, is to use either the 85-87 bell, pedal, and hydraulics, or to use an Advance Adapters bell, and combine that with the 85-87 pedal and hydraulics. A third option is to use a factory GM nv4500 bell, and combine the GM nv4500 slave with the 85-87 pedal and master. The 85-87 master can be adapted to -3AN hose using the 12x1.0 fitting from the drop down menu here. https://ormebrothers.com/products/me...pter-dual-seat Any nv4500 or nv3500 internal or external slave can be adapted to -3AN hose using a Russell 640281 fitting.

Re: 5spd from a 95 into a 85
I ran a 93 external slave in my stock height 82 for over 10 years before I sold the truck and never had an issue. I used and abused the truck on the farm also, not just a pavement cruiser. As long as your front springs aren’t worn out, you should have no problem.
Did my swap in the 90s using 85 up pedal and master and adapted to use the early slave Your truck being an 85 should have the indention in the transmission hump for the sm465 cutout. If I remember right, you can go 3” behind that to cut your shifter hole. |

Plenty of aftermarket or oem options for the clutch pedal. I’m sure I could modify the peddles from the 95 to fit the 85 Going today to look at the unit . Friend has it as he just parted out the truck . Transfer case comes with it

Re: 5spd from a 95 into a 85
That would be a Plus with the transfer included.
Maybe now just Driveshaft modification? My brother has one of these transmissions in storage. I have tried to buy it for years. I finally decided, He going to keep it

Re: 5spd from a 95 into a 85
The 1995 transfer case won't be of any use when swapping into a 1985. It drops on the wrong side.

Re: 5spd from a 95 into a 85
I have two versions of the 93/94 nv4500. I just finished a complete rebuild of one of them that will soon replace the worn out one currently in my 85. I have gained a lot of knowledge and experience converting from the auto to nv4500. Hit me up with any questions you have. There are several "gotch ya's" in the process. I also have several sets of OEM pedals for the conversion.

By dumb luck, I pulled a crossover trans from a 95 that has the early case dimensions with the newer 5.61 gears. So both trans fit my AA bell housing, otherwise there's a different bell housing for the 93/94 and 95 up. At $400 plus, that's a nice chunk of change. External slave, master and T/O bearing and lines are all OE stuff new from Rock Auto. |

So the 1985+ sm465 slave, fork, and throwout all fit right up to the AA bell?

My trans came out of a 94. Like I said, it's the early housing with the late gears. They both fit the early AA bellhousing. The AA bell housing came with a fork. I don't know if it's an AA design or OEM. Everything else is OEM for 85-87 with hydraulic clutch. BTW, the AA bellhousing is for 11 inch clutch only. I'm using a McCloud and it works great. |
