Canadians! Help me out.

To the Canadians on the board, can anyone tell me if it is cheaper to order parts directly from the USA or get them from a suplier in Canada?

I know we have all thought about it, but has anyone done it with success?

Here is an example:
I have seen ads for dropped spindles for $168.00US ($220CAD)from Chassis Tech, and I have gotten a few prices here, the cheapest being $375CAD. Can shipping, brokerage and duty be that much?

If it were a smaller priced item, it would be different, but be the time I buy all the suspension parts, the difference will be pretty great.

All comments (or Free parts) are welcome.

me and my dad get ALL our stuff from the old car center in vancouver...seems to be the cheapest so far, plus you get it a day or 2 after you order

Shipping on those items would be high from the US. They are quite heavy, and it all goes by weight.

I would guess at around the $50-$65 US dollar range.

Whereever is the cheapest. Don't forget to factor in 14% tax when it crosses the border. Brokerage fees can be avoided, only disadvantage is that alot of the places in the states screw us over on the shipping charges. Personally I havent bought anything from any mail order through the states, I use ebay and for the parts I do need from the suppliers in the states I buy them in person when I am on holidays. Saves duty charges and shipping.

I have bought a few items from Scotts Super Trucks in Penhold ALta . Some of their items are bit on the pricey side, but other than that, they're a good place to buy from. Most of my parts I have bought from fellow board members tho

We just got an outbreak over here in Washington State that crept over from the border up north. Or at least that is what the latest findings state.

You guys are going to kill me up there. I love Canada, really I do want to head up there again soon. Beautiful country, beautiful people, wanted to move there a few years ago but I believe that Americans have to give up their citizenship to obtain citizenship from another country, but I'm sure that Canadian's can obtain dual citizenship. Why is that? HMMMM.

No...you don't have to give up your citizenship to move to Canada.

Not just move there but to obtain permanent Canadian citizenship. I know that you can get a temporary citizenship for working purposes without giving up your citizenship.

Thanks for the info Alex, but these are Canadian rules for Canadian citizenship. A believe a Canadian can obtain pemanent dual citizenship, but I'm pretty sure an American cannot. I'll have to check it out.

An American can have dual(or more) citizenship. My daughter was born in the States(thus American) and is now, also, a Canadian citizen.

And she didn't have to revoke her American citizenship. That's cool. Was she a student?
I know that I heard it somewhere though a few years back that an American had to revoke American citizenship if they obtained permanent citizenship elsewhere. Or maybe it was citizenship overseas or somewhere. I'm not sure, but I know that I heard it from somewhere.
Anyway, I know that it was a huge deterrant for me than which is a big reason I didn't do it. I would never give up my American citizenship.

I think, years back, Americans did lose their citizenship if they became citizens of another country. However, that is not so anymore with respect to Canada. My daughter was born to a Canadian(me) in America and therefore, is an American and was able to obtain her Canadian citizenship

I have found that I can buy from US suppliers and have shipped to an address just south of the border, then pick up or have friend pickup. Also saves the 14.5% for us BC guys. Have bought everything from spindles to heads, and it saves much. Try a fellow here is Penticton, gives great prices.

Yeah Alex, and in a post 9-11 world i'm sure that it is a whole hell of a lot more confusing when it comes to obtaining citizenship elsewhere or getting an American citizenship.

I bought from scotts super truck and gasoline alley and they were both cheaper than ordering it direct from the states, I ordered some bumperguards from Florida once they were 30.00 by the time they got here they were 90.00, brokerage fee and exchange, and shipping, If you have small items sent up in the mail, sometimes it goes through the boarder with no fees.

I've found it's marginally cheaper to shop in Canada and Scott's in Alta is great. It's a bit of a hassle to ship stuff up and it's an even bigger hassle if you need to return something and get a new piece.
Nothing against our good neighbours but it makes sense to keep your dollars in Canada as well.

I bought most of my resto stuff from "Bill's Truck Shop" in Courtice, Ontario. He is a great guy to deal with and has all the usual stuff. He imports sheet metal and trucks mostly from California.

E-bay stuff comes and goes. You do get stung on shipping a bit, but it is expensive within Canada as well. Duty and brokerage is a pain sometimes, but so far not too expensive.
