Rear Diff I.D.
Can someone please tell me what differential I have? I believe it's from a '79 Blazer 4x4. It appears to be open, by the way it can move one wheel without the other, and what looks like a bar across the middle. Gears are 41/11 (3.73).
What is the strange little device inside? It's some kind of moving weight, like you'd find in a mechanical distributor advance. I've never seen anything like it, and web search hasn't turned anything up. I'm thinking of changing to a limited slip, due to the wear marks on the carrier from bad adjustment, and some evidence of corrosion on the teeth. If this is no big deal, can I reset the pinion and lash and continue to use it safely? Thanks!

Re: Rear Diff I.D.
A friend just sent me a link to Eaton Gov Lock. Looks like that's what this is! Still the question, is it suitable for continued use with proper adjustment?
Thanks

Re: Rear Diff I.D.
Thanks for the quick reply, Warrens69GMC. Are the Torsen and Eaton the same part?

Re: Rear Diff I.D.
You might want a rear end expert to make that decision. When I see wear on the carrier, I usually look for another rear or have mine revuilt.

Re: Rear Diff I.D.
That looks bad.. pinion been rubbing the carrier..
On the govlock it can be several things that keep it from working.. worn clutch discs and broken teeth on the engagement gears are what I've seen

Re: Rear Diff I.D.
The gov-locs at this point are old tech. Every one of those I rebuild I talk the customer into a Tru-trac and never look back. Everybody has been happy with the change over.
