Exterior Mirror question.
Gonna change out my sport mirrors , one I knocked the head off and the other flops. Bought a pair of NOS ones off the parts board here a few years ago so time to install. I think I already know the answer to my question but want to verify and hope I'm wrong. Is there a plate on the inside of the door that mirror screws attach to and is it attached to the door or loose and will fall if I just remove the screws.

Re: Exterior Mirror question.
There is a plate and it will fall if you loosen them all.

A few pics I found on the board, to give you an idea what you need.

Re: Exterior Mirror question.
Was thinking okay I could put the window down and then reach through the window and hole in door to hold plate in place then just realized window will probably need to be up so out of te way. Mmmm, wife likes to help sometimes.

Re: Exterior Mirror question.
Before taking the door apart to get to the plate. I would take some long screws/bolts depending which size/style you have holding the mirror, cut the heads off. Then remove one screw from the mirror and replace it with the longer headless screw. then take second screw out and do the same thing and so on with the third if you need to. Then slide the mirror over the headless screws and then take one out and install the actual mirror screw. Just a thought and it makes it a one-man job.

Re: Exterior Mirror question.
A note on the screws. Save your old ones if you can. They have a funny bugle head. I ordered screws from Classic industries. Thread was incorrect and so was the head. Sat too far into the mirror. Called them and they sent another set. Still wrong. Took the old ones and put them in my drill and put a spot of polishing compound on a towel and and buffed the screws. Like new. Just an idea.

Re: Exterior Mirror question.
If you're a slow learner like me and you loose both plates in the door (In my defense neither plate fell off until I shut the doors and I didn't put 2 and 2 together together after the 2nd clunk when I shut the doors. )
Anyway post 257 in the link shows how I got my mirrors installed without help. I only wish I would have thought to put a dab of something sticky on the plate so next time the mirror has to come off the plate will stay put. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...698377&page=11

Re: Exterior Mirror question.
Since I rarely ever have a helper, when I did mine I put some RTV on the plates, use the screw to hold them until it dried, then unscrewed, added mirror and rescrewed it down. Never thought about the long screw thing, wish I would have.

Re: Exterior Mirror question.
The headless screws can be long as you want. Use long enough screws and they will bind in the hole if and when the plate tries to drop. You also will have something to hold onto to prevent frpm dropping. Longer screws make it so you can hole the mirror away from paint, that I would mask as soon as the mirror is loose enough to slip tape under.
