next projects
Ok, on my '49 I've got 2 more new projects.
First, I want to wrap the exhaust with some kind of heat wrap. Any recommendations? Also, I need to find a coolant over flow tank / catch can. I don't want billet. Any ideas on that? Thanks.

are you looking for a coolant overflow from a donor, something home made from a cool looking object, not billet but possibly fabricated?

I've seen things like a canteen, aftermarket, fabricated etc. Just not billet. That doesnt fit with my truck

I put a cheap plastic overflow tank under the front passenger fender. (out of sight)
the kit came with the clear hose, but I would have preferred black

good question, you see that hole (plugged) in the inner fender beside the hole that the hose goes through......well, I can reach up under the fender to remove the lid of the reservoir, and place a hose in it attached to a funnel that goes through that other plugged hole.
I have been driving the truck for 3 years now, and have never needed to add coolant, so it really isn't THAT inconvenient to do, cause you don't need to do it very often. (look under the fender, and if the coolant level is about 1/2, then its fine) I did it this way cause not only is space limited under the hood, but I did not want to see it. Hope that helps

or I could remove the clear hose from the rad, place a funnel in the hose and fill up the reservoir (as the reservoir is lower than the rad cap)

Curious. Does it have a tube inside the tank to allow flow back to the rad or is it a recovery tank only?

the clear tube attaches to the bottom of the reservoir, so if the reservoir has coolant, the 'system' will 'draw it back' into the rad.

Got it. I have seen some that just recover overflow from old style roads with large upper tanks with capacity to store coolant. Like our original rads. The little tube was basically to direct any overflow to the ground. The overflow res would catch that rather than allow it to hit the environment, no return flow to rad built in.

this motor runs so cool, I can't believe it. Never been over 180*.
I dont know if its the overflow/recovery jug, the aluminum rad, the air deflector? or what, but the electric fans rarely come on, and when they do, it lowers the temps right away . (comes on at 180, I think?) It is very stressful to drive an old vehicle and you keep looking at the gauge hoping it doesn't overheat. This truck runs very cool with no worries.
