Windshield replacement

I am looking for an installer to replace my damaged windshield on a 71. So far, the only place that has confirmed they can do the job only has glass with a blue tint bar across the top.

My existing windshield has no tint, and I would like to keep it original, or at least factory looking. Did a search and could not find a recent thread. Has anyone recently found a glass company with quality windshields?

What you're describing from your glass shop is called a shaded windshield. Any quality glass shop should be able to order the tinted windshield for you. Tinted windshields have a uniform green tint. A windshield with absolutely no tint is called clear.

Clear - no tint
Tinted - uniform green tint
Shaded - tinted (green) with a blue band across the top

I bought mine from a local windshield shop. They had all 3 options available. It took a while to get it right as they kept asking me for the vin and I gave it to her. She kept saying "I need the whole vin number".

Wow, $129 for a windshield is a great price. Saving this for the future.

What windshield options came on these trucks originally? I am guessing that the shaded band across the top was not factory.

My old one "looks" clear. But I would need to get a good look to see if there might be a slight green tinge to it, definitely no shade band though.

The three I described in my post were the options. If you had air conditioning you could not get the clear glass.

I was able to purchase glass from a local auto glass shop. They said hell no to installing it. I contacted another generic glass man. He insisted on using his w/s but only charged me $110 for the install and $45 for the gasket. Did it by himself in 20 mins…way cool guy too!

Not sure why these glass companies refuse to install windshield in these trucks, it isn't that difficult. I guess if it doesn't use glue to hold the glass in, it short circuits their brains.

I paid $210 installed last year. I dropped off the truck and before I got home, which is a 20 minute drive, they called and said it was done.

This was with the chrome molding in the rubber seal.

I paid something close to that same price about 3 years ago. Called a couple speed shops in the area to get a clue who knows how to do the work and contacted one of those.

It was a mobile service, the glass/seal with stainless trim gave the installer fits. He worked close to 4 hours until dawn and came back the next day to finish/try again. I ended up helping him by adding "down" pressure on the middle of the glass with a suction cup tool and the glass was finally installed w/trim. It was the trim causing all the issues.

I had Safelite do mine, had to take it in because the office manager wanted to help the installer because of the stainless trim. They came to my house to do the 76' K10 and the 64' C30.

I replaced my windshield a couple of years ago. It was originally all clear. My glass shop said they could only get one with a shaded strip on the top. I went with it and am glad I did. It's a bit more pleasant to drive in the summer.

When I was looking for a shop, they advertised that they did classic vehicles. They didn't seem reluctant to tackle my job.

I like my new shaded windshield. It looks exactly like the original except new one is not fogging and delaminating at the edges. It matches the other original glass in the truck, having a very slight green tint. The slightly darker blue shade strip looks nice.

It was a mobile installer I did not meet; they went to the body shop where I was having the inside front section of roof replaced with new sheet metal section I bought from GMC Pauls. I provided the rubber seal, Precision from GMC Pauls. The installer provided the glass, and re-used the stainless trim. The sheet metal installation and windshield with installation was about $500 in about 2016 and I thought that was a very reasonable deal.

If I still lived in the north Dallas area I'd be dropping in to have him do more work on the truck, sheet metal work and taking dents out. Jose's Auto Body & Refinishing in McKinney, TX.
