Bent and cracked...
.
My bad luck continues. Today the road took out my front wheel. Still holds air remarkably. These wheels are no longer in production and a deep dive Online reveals few options in the way of finding a used replacement. Repair is probably not an option as the polished lip has that huge tear in it. So...may be in the market for a new set of wheels -Kevin

Re: Bent and cracked...
That's too bad. Those look like nice rims.

Re: Bent and cracked...
It might be worth looking at a place called Hubcap Annie. My wife had her wheels repaired, admittedly, they weren't that bad. However it still might be worth a check.

Re: Bent and cracked...
There are wheel shops all over the country that are in the business of fixing what you show above.
Example: Rite Way Wheels in Walnut Creek, CA Good luck

Re: Bent and cracked...

I have a wheel repair facility here in DFW that will get my business if they think it's possible. Took a late model GM wheel with the same sort of lump in it and they had no issue fixing it for 125 bucks (no big @ss crack or tear though). I'll have it to them Monday. If they can fix it I suspect it'll cost more than that due to the polished lip. If they can't fix it...man...it's gonna be expensive to replace all 4 wheels/tires. -Kevin

Re: Bent and cracked...
Sorry to see that wheel getting so trashed! Just replace the ones on one side, so that you have a spare for the other two. Back when I was really broke, I had different wheels on each side of my vehicle.

HAHA! How would anybody even know...it would take some observational awareness over time to figure it out. eBay has nothing. A nation wide search of craigslist yielded two full sets of these, one in Houston for 950, another in Vegas for 400 and a couple other questionable hits. The broken wheel is a Boss 338 20x8.5. American racing makes a replica of this wheel called the VN338 but it's not a perfect match...still an option LOL. -Kevin

Re: Bent and cracked...
The wheel can be fixed . Best bet go to a local dealership they will know where you can get it fixed locally . I’ve seen trucks that do it at at dealerships granted they do curb rash repairs but they do straighten and weld rims

From the looks of it, only the lip got damaged. So the balance and rounding hasn’t been altered. Take it to a reputable tire shop and have them take the tire off. Somebody there should be able to tell you of a machine shop or a Welder who can repair it. The rim is non-ferrous metal, so with a little bit of patience, can be worked, welded, and polished to the point that only you know it’s there. |

Re: Bent and cracked...

Thanks guys...will find out soon enough whether these guys here can fix it: https://wheelrepairsolutions.com/ The web site mentions they do "wheel remanufacturing" and define that as such: Remanufacturing is used for wheels with structural damage, including wheels that are bent significantly, cracked, or missing metal from minor curb rash. The process for remanufacturing alloy wheels or other types of original wheels uses welding, a CNC lathe, and vibratory wheel polishing. Ima see today if the spare I've been hauling around for 7 years actually fits! -Kevin

Re: Bent and cracked...
Don’t think I would reuse that tire either way fixing or replacing the rim

After examining the wheel/tire on the bench, looks to me like the pot hole grabbed the edge of the wheel as it rotated down into it. Don't think the tire took any loads or pinches in the process of the wheel getting damaged. What is still not fully understood is how the thing didn't let the air out. This pic shows the portion of the tire that seals against the wheel is completely exposed. In the pics above you see the lip of the wheel, the part that seals with the tire, is not touching the tire. Crazzy! -Kevin

The spare fits! It had 10psi...but it went on no problem. Don't think the lug nuts are proper for it though so I'll not be driving anywhere with it. The guy at WRS said he wasn't certain but thought it was repairable. Should know soon enough. -Kevin

When the tire shop scratched the front rims on my Chevelle a few ago they paid to have them repaired . I took the rears in too which I paid for them to be redone . Glad I did as The wheels came out better than when I bought them so they wouldn’t have matched

Re: Bent and cracked...
I'm going to agree with Mark on replacing the tire. That kind of "injury" doesn't always show itself right away. At least keep an eye on it for suspicious bulges. When I was young and single I drove stupid high (120+ MPH) speeds with retreaded tires that had to have tubes in them. I'm no longer young, nor immortal, though I used to act that way back in the day. Lucky to be alive, 50 years later.

Yeah, I'm going to watch it closely. It's almost time for tires anyway as these were new in 2016. Plenty of tread left as they only have around 18k miles on them. I too was young and invincible back in the day and got away with some really dangerous/destructive behavior with respect to my driving/racing/showing off, etc... Happy to be alive but don't want something so preventable as a blowout at speed to kill me now. -Kevin

I appreciate you all's concern over my safety...thank you! Just ordered 2 new tires for the front...have an appointment tomorrow to get them installed. I've come to this decision because of your arguments and because I do drive this truck very enthusiastically...often. The previous tires are 40 series whereas the new ones are going to be 45 series. This should give a little more padding between road and wheel, ease up on the (tire related) ride stiffness and fill in the fender gap just a tiny bit better. My calculations put the difference at 0.47 inches which means the tire will stretch further away from the center of the hub by less than 1/4 inch. Right now I'm thinking this will not cause any rubbing. EDIT: I calculated that wrong. The total sidewall height increase will be ~1/2 inch all the way around changing tire height by ~1" overall. Hmmm -Kevin
