TH 700R4 ID Decoding
Hello from Germany,
I would like to convert my 66 C10 from a 3-speed manual transmission to an automatic transmission. I was offered a TH700 R4. But I would like to know which vehicle it comes from. There are lots of numbers on the large barcode sticker. In capital it says 3 AFM. I think because there are three letters, the number 3 means it was built in 1993. The M should stand for the TH700r4. But I can't find anything about the identifier AF. Can you help me with that? Greetings Nils |

Re: TH 700R4 ID Decoding
That's right at the end of the non-E 700R4s. It will have all the upgrades in it. Perhaps not the Vette servo, that depended on car/truck by that point IIRC. I'd still do a mild shift kit/filter. There are many many upgrades for the 700R4 if you want to make it stronger. But it will be fine behind that 283. It was factory install behind TBI 350s in that era.

That’ll make it easier to hook up the tv cable.
Info here on that. https://www.bowtieoverdrives.com/ |

3AFM is a 1993 from 5.7L "D"-Car (3.08 Axle) with Wiring Type 18.
The D platform/D-body, was used for Cadillac models, primarily the Fleetwood Series 75 and the Fleetwood Limousine. |

If Randy is correct about it being Cadillac then you better check the bellhousing bolt pattern is correct for a Chevy.

D body is longer wheelbase B. Fleetwood/Fleetwood Brougham (and the commercial chassis that limos and hearses were built from. Last year for the car 700R4s, next year they got LT1s/4L60E.

If you are going to change the converter, and want a decent budget upgrade, order one for an S10. It will stall considerably higher than the stock D converter and really wake things up. Still lock up. We used to do S10 or Corvette converters back in the day. Vette ones are more expensive.

Re: TH 700R4 ID Decoding
Interesting, this has a 1993 build date. Most of the 1993 4L60s were built as 4L60Es, the electronic-shifted version of the 4L60. It was a nice find as it has all the upgrades. I will not even mess with the early versions, 1982-1986.

Re: TH 700R4 ID Decoding
That's what's one of nice things about the B/D car 700s... no 4L60Es until the LT1 arrives in 1994.

Re: TH 700R4 ID Decoding
Missed this post earlier. Any of the 90-96 RWD D body Cadillacs that got CHEVY engines got the Chevy bellhousing on the trans. 5.0 LO3 TBI Chev 91/92 (not 307 Olds from 1990), 5.7 TBI L05 trailer pack cars (90-92), standard LO5 TBI 1993. 1994-1996 all got 4L60E. And each one of those is slightly different.
