Which Clutch Kit?

I have a 168 tooth flywheel (which I will also be replacing), but for some reason had a 10" diameter clutch. In any case, it seems I should be looking for a new 168-tooth neutral balanced flywheel, and an 11" clutch with a 10 tooth 1-1/8" input shaft. Problem is too many choices. Research leads me to seek out Luk brand. However, I'm having trouble finding the part number for it. Doesn't come up on any sites if I use the search "by vehicle." I can find a few part numbers meeting the specs I called out above, and they say "does not fit your vehicle." WTF. Why can't this be easier. Also am I wrong in thinking it doesn't matter which year vehicle you use as long as it has a gen I SBC with the parameters I listed above?

Normally, during a routine clutch replacement, the flywheel doesn't have to be replaced.. Instead, it can be refaced by a reputable machine shop. How about giving us a description of the engine. A ten inch clutch is pretty common. Unless your engine is a torque beast, a 10 inch clutch will do just fine.

Thanks for replying. I figure it’s worth the low cost for a new flywheel, especially since I’m changing clutch wear surface size.

It’s a 305 from 77-78 based on casting number.

The clutch you linked is one I was looking at but looks like it’s closer to 11-7/8” than the 11” that’s called for. I just ordered the Luk 04-049. Crossing my fingers that it’s right…

A stock 305 is less than 200 HP.. That's why it came equipped with a 10" clutch.. Also that explains why "does not fit this vehicle" kept coming up for the 11" clutch..

I'll say this in passing but with the disclaimer: It's your vehicle to do with as you please.. I worked as a mechanic for over 30 years.. I'd never recommend a person upgrade a 305 clutch to 11" model.. The little engine simply doesn't need it... It's a total waste of time, money, and effort.

Everything I see listed for your vehicle points to 11" disc. Are you saying the disc you pulled out measures 10"? Sounds like the last fella put a 10" disc where an 11" should be. What does the pressure plate measure across the surface? Is it for a 10 or 11" disc?

Careful looking at the "low cost" of a new flywheel, it's highly likely that it won't be nearly the same quality of material that the original is built with. Depending on what shops charge these days to resurface a flywheel, I would try my best to stay with the factory flywheel.
Did the kit you ordered work out for you?
