Joined in July, finally got accepted YAAAY!!!!

Hi everyone,

Name is Jim and I live in northern Arizona.

This is my vintage '69 C-30 set up as a 440 Holmes wrecker just after making the final move to our 'new' home & shop. I've got lots of questions cuz this has a later 350(?) with the GM high energy ignition and don't know what year it is.

I've been doing a ton of work to it all year long as I totaled the car I was depending on. I refuse to buy any late model vehicle because of the digital electronics and the way all the systems are all tied together. Soooo, this will be my daily driver.

Best wishes to you all!

Sincerely,

Jim

Hello Warren,

Thanks for responding and for the welcome.

I've got just over 300 photos on my phone and a few more on my desktop computer. Most of them are from this year and what I've needed to do to bring it up to reliable/safe for the road.

Best wishes to ya’ll.

Sincerely,

Jim

Welcome to the Forum.

I like your truck.

Reminds me of Cooter's Tow truck on the Duke's of Hazzard.

I see nothing wrong with using that as a daily driver! I sure could have used that unloading my sitting rock!

Welcome , nice rig . It looks like you still have an original intake ,water pump and alternator set up . Maybe someone has updated the distributor to a HEI which I have done with eight out of nine of the 67-72 Chevy's that I have owned.

Hi 3757chevy,

Thanks for the info on the engine details. I knew about the HEI distributor but I thought the entire engine had been replaced cuz the alternator is a later one wire style w/internal regulator. It's rather different than a 69 dump truck I bought to repair the frame on this one. Don't know what engine that truck had (still have it). I've not been able to find numbers for either engine in the number lists that I've found for small block Chevys.

If anyone is interested, here is the thread I started to discuss this truck and all the work I've been doing on and with it:

I've got a 1 wire on a '67 C10 , it bolts up in the same way as the original. Are you checking the numbers stamped on the block in front of the passenger side head? This is a picture of the 327 stamping code on my '68 Burb.

Hi Mike,

I just noticed your name in the signature area. Sorry that I didn't see it sooner!

Here is a view of the numbers for the wrecker engine:

And here are the same locations for the dump truck engine:

Name: Dump truck numbers.jpg

I had forgotten about the "ECHO EN MEXICO" with the casting number. It's why I am pretty certain that the wrecker has a later engine.

I haven't spent days researching these numbers, but what I've found so far hasn't been of much help.

https://nastyz28.com/chevy-engine-co...ngs.php#suffix...https://nastyz28.com/gm-chevy-codes/...s-suffix-2.php This is a good source for info. According to what I see that cgc on the dump truck motor says it's a Tonawanda Sept 2nd 1971 350. The made in Mexico makes me think a Target 350 but I'm not positive on that one.

Thanks a bunch Mike for checking into this further. From the casting number of the dump truck engine (3970014) I get "L.A. built Camaro" 200 HP cuz of the 2 barrel carb.

On the wrecker engine the 'M' prefix fits with the rear casting 'Mexico' as to Mexico origin. But why 'MB' is still a mystery, at least to me. Not that I'm about to lose any sleep over it!

What is the 'Target' designation? Factory/warranty replaced to a specific vehicle perhaps?

It was an economical crate engine from GM
