Setting idle speed
235 motor with HEI distributor with coil inside it. I have an old sun tach/dwell meter with 2 leads 1 black one red. Havent used it in 20 years. I want to set the idle rpm . The HEI distributor has a green tach wire that I capped off. If I connect the red lead to this and the black to a ground will this function as a tach? Just making sure I dont want to burn out the distributor. Never did this with an HEI

Re: Setting idle speed
It should. The tach pickup on the distributor should work with most "shop" tachs.
My new distributor for my 77 came yesterday so when I get it swapped I'll try to remember to dig out one of my old dwell meter/tachs and see if it works.

Re: Setting idle speed
Thanks ! I cant think of any other way it would work. Had this old engine tune up dwell /tach ,compression tester , remote start ,vacuum tester buried away. Dug it out the first time in 20 or 30 years but its in perfect condition
