Glove Box Door

Wanting to buy a chrome glove box door, or have my stock item plated. What's the best way to match the black gauge bezel texture for the face of the plated door?

Re: Glove Box Door

There's a type of spray paint called ''Wrinkle Black.'' Generic blend from several manufacturers. You shoot it on and the texture forms. Don't know the details of how the magic works.
You don't need a chromed steel door to get that black texture. Any surface that takes paint will do.

Here is a thread on it. The pictures are munged but he has a pretty good explanation on it.

Re: Glove Box Door

Harley has a good wrinkle black also. I've used it on a few dash projects.

Appreciate the ideas!
That thread was very helpful.
I only mentioned the chrome door because it will match my new bezel outer trim.

Re: Glove Box Door

Cost and or the relationship you have with the chrome shop you deal with may be a consideration. 190 bucks for a new chrome door from the truck trinket vendors or maybe you could tell the chrome shop what your plans were and they could only polish the areas that the chrome will actually show and that you want shiny to the high perfection level.

Re: Glove Box Door

mr48chev, what a can of worms, indeed.
I actually purchased and returned 2 (AMD) chrome doors already. They were both plated well but severely misshaped, compared to my stock item. I have a decent plating service, but haven't taken the plunge yet. It probably seems trivial to most, but it's a detail that I think will compliment the rest of the interior. I'll be hitting a few shows this year, maybe I'll find a better one.

At first I thought you wanted to mount your gauges on an old Glove Box Door and set that in front of the Steering Wheel.
It's been done.

The advantage is that you're not limited to using the seven holes and those widths that GM provides. You could mount any gauges anywhere. As many as fit. Also it would be neat to pop the button and drop the Instrument Panel open for servicing. And real steel chromes up very nicely.

Disadvantages are many: Finding a usable Glove Box Door to sacrifice. Then You gotta cut custom holes for every gauge and indicator light, and cut a notch for the Wheel -- thru two sheets. The factory flexible plastic Printed Circuit would have to be duplicated with actual wires and terminal connectors. You would need flexible tubing or quick disconnects for the Oil Pressure gauge and Manifold Vacuum indicators. [And any other mechanical gauges.]

I've heard of it being done, and maybe seen the pictures, but it's more than I want to get into on a running truck. Too much downtime. But a cool concept.
