What kind of lube do I use for my Rearend?
Not vasaline or KY.....
I noticed that there are basically 2 weights of gear lube. 80w90 and then there is a 85w140. I know the 80w90 will be better for the mileage, but will it offer enough protection? I do plan to use a synthetic gear lube, so maybe the protection worry is not a problem? Also, How many quarts do I need for a 12 bolt? Thanks Last edited by 68 Suburban; 01-21-2004 at 01:58 PM. |

I alway have used 80w90 here in cold country. Last time I did this I bought 3 qts and used a little over 2.

80/90 is the weight to use takes about 2quarts

After I change the fluid I take it for a short drive and I check the level again, usually takes just a little more to top it off again.

To late, and it was only $6.99 a quart Those rumors of synthetic wiping out seals have been around for a long time. I have never had a problem in any older vehicle that I have run synthetic products.

I swapped my rear over to synthetic too, and haven't had any problems.
I think the axle seals on my truck ar ethe only seals that DON'T leak. |

its true that it is the only seal that doesnt leak, or at least on my truck
my oilpan, my rear main seal, my ps gear box, my tranny, all leak but not my rear end!

I've never had a problem running synthetic and in rear ends and transmissions (manuals of course). I always check the manuals I have before changing fluids too just to get a good idea of how much to get and what weight. Usually 80w90 for rears, fronts and trannies. If you have posi, always run the GM additive, never had any problems with that stuff, it's a little spendy but it really works.
