Sigh -- She died :(
Driving home tonight and the truck started bogging down like mad and backfiring through the exhaust. My Alternator then started screaming and died, barely limped home in time, she died just outside the garage door. Put the battery charger on and managed to get her into the shop, she had absolutely no power at all, and it took nearly full throttle to get her rolling into the shop (deep snow, can't push it)
So now what? I'm just so mad at the stupid thing right now that I don't know what to do with it. And to top it all off, I fixed my dip stick tonight, and discovered that I was critically low on oil (got 2 quarts in) Probally busted everything up with that little stunt to. Why don't I just take a freaking sledge hammer to that engine, maybe I can fix it that way

have you tryed shooting it the rod? thats what i do when my truck acts up .
Sounds like you might have some carbueration problems? |

Its a combination of dead alternator, crappy carb and crappy distributer... If I haven't killed my truck's lower end with the oil being that low (never lost pressure, just ran crappy till it was warm)

Ben -- I don't think I even know what a good running 350 sounds like, lol I just can't seem to get this goofy thing to work for me, there is something wrong somewhere that I am missing that is fouling the whole motor...

Russell, have you checked you fuel filter lately, and air breather. Might have got ten some water in the gas and it's freezing up on ya. It'd been so cold and them a little warm, may have caused some condensation in the tank. Throw a little gas line anti freeze in it and try that. Backfiring could be caused by an ice condition as well. When your out there thros a tape on the door and send me the measurement. Canadian winters do wonders to trucks.

Thanks. Any luck getting the truck going? I am also looking for good OEM drivers door for my son's 80 GMC project as well as a good drivers side short step fender. Let me know if you hear of any. Can buy or trade or what ever. Again thanks.

There are a couple at the local wreckers that are in good condition, I can get some pictures if you are interested. I'm looking for fenders, bedsides, Any headers that will end up pointing straight back and sit at the same height as the frame rails, and 5.7 Vortec heads (casting 906 would be excellent).
If I you were to buy them, I would charge the cost of the doors from the wreckers. I would also ask that you pay the shipping on the doors. I haven't gotten out to the truck yet, so no luck yet, lol

Got her running again -- It was the distributer. Now I'm just figuring out all the timing and making sure once and for all that it is setup properly. Got one or two little issues yet that I'm not happy with (runs real rough at a cold idle, and has no vac going to the advance at idle)
Alternator is definitly toast too -- Thats gonna be a nice touch unless I can rebuild it in the mechanics shop at school

Russell, I know of a guy who has two brand new 8 Ft bedsides for sale. I will be seeing him this week and will let you know the price. I would be very interested in the pics of the door and fender if you can get them. Lets see what we can do on the prices. I believe these ore OEM sides. Actually I will email him tonight and see how much he wants if you are interested.

I got your picture (of the door width) I'll post it in a sec...
I just got my vac advance working for the first time since I got the truck, I had a pair of vac lines hooked up backwards, and HOLY CRAP what a HUGE difference! That thing sounds a heck of a lot better when I rev it, and it no longer makes that funny noise when I spin her up to 4000 rpm or so and let her off suddenly! I'm very happy I figured this out!

5w40 is what she has in there now
Still has a slight tremor in the idle, but I think is my HEI from 76, and my never rebuilt, never tuned carb that are causing that, and a noticed slight lack of power
