Radiator Fan Shroud Confusion!?!?!

Ok i was told the radiator in my truck is from a Automatic transmission c-10 or something. My truck being a manual. I was told automatics have larger radiator or smaller or something.

So it comes to the radiator shroud. Its held on by zip ties and bungee cords....LOL... I dont think it was ment to fit the size of radiator i have.

Is there anyway to find one that would fit my truck and radiator?

There is a difference. The automatics have a straight across top mount for the radiator and the manuals have a stepped down one. I ran into a problem similar to what you have. When I bought a new radiator I ordered the shorter one and didn't realize it after I already installed it. To fix this I got a chrome stepdown one to fix it.

To get a new radiator shroud you can look at most aftermarket places for our trucks. Chevyduty, LMC, etc. all have them.

You are missing the radiator support bracket that bolts where your zip ties are.

What year is your truck? The bracket you need is this for an automatic http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2458623244 The manual one (can't find on EBay. has a stepdown. You need this one to drop down enough to hold the radiator in. Also you would need radiator rubber bushings to mount to this underside.

Its an 86 gmc k1500

i dont even know where that thing would go or bolt on...

Here's the best pic I have of the brackets that hold the radiator in place. I don't have a shroud since I have electric fans.

Also, you have the wrong shroud. Here is a pic of the shroud that came on my 85 C10.

BladeX, what you have there is a big block and/or HD shroud for the 73-80 years. I think 81+ shrouds were two pieces like Mike is showing.

You need a small block shroud and cover. I have a cover if you need one...but it is off my 73 and I do not know for sure if they are the same for 81+ or not.

BTW, the fan should be 1/2 way in the shroud to work properly...whay you have now does no good whatsoever...might as well lose the shroud all together if you plan to run it that way.

That's not right. My 75 has the short radiatory factory WITH the tranny cooler in the passengerside tank and it was factory a Auto. The tall radiator in the 70's was part of a HD cooling package that came with the towing package. My 79 had a tall and towing.

I think all 81 up trucks run tall radiators and just the core and width is changed for the apps. The Deisel radiator is about 6 inches WIDER.

The difference between a Auto and a Manual is the if it has the tranny cooler in the tank.

Just missing the top plate on the truck and the shrode should sit in a slot on the bottom and bolt to the top plate off those ears it's ziptied with. Probaly missing the rubber isolators as well. I have seen them in the help section.


I agree that the shroude is for a 454. It appears to be the same ONE peice as my 88 454.

The 454 was one peice and the 305-350 was a two piece that was extended out to get around the fan. You need the right shroude or your loosing a LOT of cooling potential.

Now would be the time to go electric if you been thinking about it.

Just get one off a 81-87 with a 305 at the junkyard. Don't forget the metal brackets to hold it at the top. Also, check to make sure you have the rubber cushions at the bottom cradle for the radiator to sit in.

The shroud sits in slots at the bottom and screws to the brackets at the top.

Top plate for any truck BUT deisel made 81-87 and the long 2 peice made same time frame for 305 and 350.

Pay close attention to that one that swervin posted. see the slot?

There is a clamp that goes around the radiator hose to keep it off the belts that goes there. Look for that also. That is the correct shroud he pictured.

fyi The one you have in that picture is for a 454 up through 88 it looks like. That way you can sell it just put a disclaimer your not absolutly postive.

Is there any difference to the radiator brackets for a 454 (4-core) radiator? I'm looking into getting a bigger radiator when I get a new engine.

Talking to Dan about it now. Im sure he will prolly end up with mine. I dont need it and he does.

Tyler...yes there is a diffrence...there is a different top plate on the 454 bracket as well as some diff bushings for the bigger radiator that it required. i just upgraded to that. the bracket is like 15 bux and the bushings like 7 bux from GM.

I have a 4 core in the garage. The top plate holds down by the crimp where the tanks attach on my 75, 79,88. Now I just eye balled it against the 3 core in my 79 but that looks the same at the Crimp/where it mounts, just one less core deep in the center. I just haven't tried it yet. I was going to drop that 4 core in my 75 once I get the right top plate for the tall.

Let me figure it out. Not in any hurry just have the 4 core. the 75 runs cool but it's a old radiator. Might be original to the truck.
