is this a fair deal?

I am going have a 350 rebuilt soon and of course am working with a limited but reasonable budget. Its for a daily driven Blazer that will see some minor trails but nothing major. The guy building it is friends (and former employee) of a guy who owns a machine shop so he does the machine work himself therefore saving me and him money. He says he can get me rebuild with close to 350hp for around $1500 installed reusing my carb and intake, does that sound like a fair price? I posted a couple days ago asking what parts should be new and what could be re-used and it sounds like he is using most of the parts recomended here.

I know I can buy a base line crate motor from gm for about $1200 but I would like a little more power than that will provide. Thanks for input.

Prices may vary in some areas. If he is going to r&r the engine and actually get 350hp it sounds reasonable. I would suggest getting a quote from another source. This should tell you if it is a "fair deal".

Can you tell us what parts are new and what parts are reused and what machine work is being done? And.... Does the motor have a warranty. For a truck, you really want to build torque, but....

Again, I would just get a rebuild kit from www.enginekits.com, then swap on Vortec Fast-Burn Heads/RPM AirGap Intake/Holley 750/XE268 cam. With that, you'll be at $1200 for the topend, and you'll have about 375bhp.

I would agree that torque is more important in something like you are building than HP. I would definitely check around and explore as many options as possible. Also with the crate engine you have a great warrenty to consider so how much value do you put in piece of mind?

Not trying to talk you out of it by any means just remember on the trail torque can get you out of trouble where as HP might get you into some(trying to power over an obstacle for example)
