steering wheel repair

i have the original steering wheel in my 68 c-10. its in great shape other than one thin (maybe .010 wide) crack on the 3 spokes right at the hub. i sanded it down now im ready to try and fix those cracks. i bought the repair kit from eastwood. how far down should i grind out the crack and how wide should i go. i have an idea that i should go all the way down to metal rod and about a 1/4 wide. anyone have good results repairing one.

We repaired a wheel and it looked great until the temperature reached 10 degrees F. Apparently the coeffcient of expansion/contraction is different for the the two materials as the repaired area opened up.

We used Eastwood's repair kit.

did you grind it out as i explained or differently. i hope to never live in a place that gets below 30 deg again. so i probably wont have that problem of re-cracking here in fla like you did in michigan. thanks for reply

We did grind out the areas to be repaired per the instructions with the kit.

I had the same type cracks in mine.I pulled the wheel off and ground out the cracks.I then used an industrial grade Epoxy and filled the cracks.I smoothed it as much as possible and let it set up for a few days. Filed and sanded. Then I used steel wool on the entire wheelsmoothing and cleaning it.While Mrs.Panel was out of town I ran it thru the dishwasher.Took a rag and some thinner and wiped it down.I then hung it from the center hole and spray painted it with Krylon. It has a leather wrap on it and works great and feels good.It cost me about $3.00-$4.00 and a couple hours labor.
It's not show quality but it looks pretty good.Besides I drive my truck and any wheel I use in it will show some wear and have the typical oil from skin on it.
