buying a chevy 409 for my truck

I'm buying a 409 for my truck, a friend of mine has it complete and in pieces, new pistons and rings (bored out 30 over), new heads, it's all there... can anyone give me any advice on this engine? Where to go for quality info, parts etc?

Those 409's are just boat anchors, better cut your losses and send it to me, I'll take care of it for you!!!

Sorry for not giving any info, I just love the way a good, built 409 sounds and wanted you to know how lucky you will be to have one!

ive got a buddy that has 4 of them sitting in his barn , even has a set of gm replacment heads for one from years and years ago still in the boxes , and i cant get him to turn loose of any of them

I don't think there is nothing prettier than the 348/409 engines, they look sweet when dressedup. JMO

Wow A 409 what a find. I would Rebuilt it, sale it,and take the$$$
and get a 454 for the truck.

I should have mentioned in my earlier post that I have a friend thats got a lot of stuff for these, If I remember right he has a Duel Quad setup, trip setups and maybe some other stuff as well. If you let me know I can talk to him about what you might be looking for. He kind of ornary in some days I can get some reasonable prices out of him and other days he tries putting the screws to me. I have known him for 30+ years and generally get reasonble prices from him, most people he doesn't know he usually sticks the price right to them especially if it's nastalga peices and there hard to come by. He has barn loads of old stuff, Ford flathead stuff, old corvette trips and dual quads, way to much stuff to even think about listing.

I don't want to sell it, mostly because this guy is my best bud and has had the engine since he was 19 (17years), and has always dreamed of putting it in a 67-72... I'm not a real horsepower hog, whatever I can get out of this engine will be plenty good enough for me (and I understand that's quite alot)...

One thing I would like to learn about (and some of you are gonna think this is bass ackwards) is putting some kinda fuel injection on this thing... anyone know if there's a bolt on available?

All kinds of fuel injection available. Check out Accell's setup put it on my buddies 502 and made a huge difference! Get ready to drop about 1200+ on it though!

a boardmember has several 409s in his cars. i think his username is bob409 or something. i know he has a website www.348-409.com. good lukc those are sweet engines. check out summitracing.com and jegs.com for fuel injection kits... i also know a boardmember has a 409 in his 4x4. i have pics somewhere but i havent seen him online in a while

A fuel Injection system would certainly be nice axcept there is one problem, nobody has a manifold setup for it unless you want to go with a Holley Projection setup. there OK but Multiport is better. Other alternative, Find a Single Plane Intake or Small Tunnel Ram and make a top for it like the MiniRam or Stealth Ram setup and Have the Injector bungs setup on it then you can use something like the Holley Comander, Accells or other ECM and wiring harness with it. MultiPoint is the way to go for best results. It would deffinately be different and would certainly get a bunch of oohs and ahws with it. The 409 was one big torque Monster. if you are serious about EFI, I would be glad to help any way I can, You also might want to give Crower a call and he can grind a cam for you that will work w/FI. there arent to many cams around these days for a 409 never mind one that will support FI. JMO

I would also say that 3x2 and 2x4 intakes can be setup for FI id=f the manifolds are Aluminum, there is getting more & more stuff available these days for doing some nice trick FI setups..

They were great motors! Initially for trucks but crossed over into passenger cars that provided some great racing back in the 60's. They also have the sweetest loping sound.

theres the boardmember i was thinking of with the 4x4 with a 409! chevy 409! and as for having fuel injection, im sure if you contacted some of the companies that make fi setups they could help you make some type of system. does the 348-409 have its own specific intake design or something?

how much do these motors usually cost? they are before my time (i`m 28) but i always though they looked cool and evey older drag racer guy i talk to swears by them. i know there aren`t alot of parts available for these but i`ve seen them running in the 9 sec. zone in cars. i used to have a 57 p/u that i was going to put a 348 in but i could`nt find one. anyway, sounds like a good deal. would look great under the hood.

Thanx for all the comments guys... I really appreciate it, 'specially the advice...

I can't pick the engine up until may long weekend, but my buddy has promised to keep it until then... the price tag is $1000 cdn, that's about four bucks american... all moving parts are new, just have to redunk the block and put it together... I'll probably be checkin in alot after I start, as this will be my first full rebuild...

Getting the frame powdercoated this week, just finished stripping it down yesterday... my truck is now a pile of parts against the wall... NOW the real fun starts!

btw, what would you guys recommend for a differential for this beast? I don't have any immediate plans to race it or anything, although that's not out of the question... mostly just a fun summer ride...

Also, I wanna put in a 700r4 trans, should I build it up or anything? I've heard they can be a bit fragile...
