auto shifter has a grinding feeling when cold?

when i shift truck into gear when cold i can feel sortof a light bad bearing grind, shifts fine when warm ?, i repalced both lower and upper bearing in my steering colum ( non-tilt 71). does the tightness off the spring hold up bolt have any effect on the shifting into gear? i lubed everything up good while i had apart. anyone had a similer problem? THANKS
