Post 3/4 ton front disk brakes

Just want to carify something. If I want to convert to disk brakes on my '70 3/4 ton, I understand that I can find spindles/rotors/calipers off of a '73-'87 3/4 ton? I also understand that I will need the newer ball joints as well.

But what I am not sure of, is can I use my original control arms? Or do I need the newer ones of those also? Will the disk setup work with my manual brakes, until I can do that swap? Will a new style booster/cylinder work on our trucks also?

Thanks!!!
Reid

The 3/4 ton parts fit from 71-86 or 7. You do have to change balljoints,& may run into a centerlink/tierod problem(use 71 up pcs). You can use the lower a arms, but may have to modify the steering stops to get the full turning radius. On the master cyl,you can set up as manuel brakes, but will need the manuel disc cyl. The later boosters can be made to fit,but are not a bolt on. Good luck......69 longhorn.

Can you explain the steering parts problem a bit more?

Do you mean I need a new center link, and tie-rods? Can these be used from the donor truck or would they need to be of the older years?

Nobody has any info (consistant info ) on the center link. If you use 71-up on the center link, you will avoid any miss match on parts. The tierod assys are also different from 70 to 71(different lenghts&thread size). You can use pcs from a donor truck,& just replace with new as needed(best to pull the parts off the same truck 71-up),then when ordering parts there is less confusion. Hope that explains it better....69 longhorn.

I used my '70 centerlink and used the '71 tie rod ends and adjusters along with the '71 ball joints. It all worked fine. I cut the frame pieces that the brake lines mount to off the donor truck and welded them on the the front of my crossmember. I bought new steel lines from Inline Tube (buy direct from them and save $) The disc lines run in front of the spindle while the drum line is behind. Same clips on crossmember secure both. I also had to buy reman calipers as the ones that came with my parts vehicle were wrong type for stock hoses. Your best bet is get all of the pieces from a 71-72 3/4 ton truck INCLUDING the booster as the drum one isn't enough IMO, and I'm still running it...

Thanks for the info guys.

I really think I am going to have to concentrate on finding the parts off of a newer style truck though. The chances of me finding a '71-'72 3/4 ton around these parts are slim-to-none. But the '73-'87 trucks are a dime-a-dozen.

I have a 72 3/4 2wd chassis sitting near here... here being near Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. Minty straight no rust frame ... but no body around here wants it... it had 60000 mles on it.. friend bought it for the Bed. And parted the rest... I got the frame cause I stored it for him. The front brakes are all still in tact. Hey its still in Canada it may be worth shipping to you the parts if your interested...make an offer I cant refuse

Hey Rod, email me off list at repo1@shaw.ca

What all does it have on it? Would you sell just the front suspension stuff? Or do you want to get rid of the entire frame as a complete unit.

Is it a rolling frame? Coil or leaf springs?

Its a coils spring unit,.. very good trailing arms.. very good cab frame mounts, discs look well within tolerance and no scaring, pads are very good... calipers are there also, it had a detroit locker in it.. Had ... we all know who kept that. but the diffs still there. Amazingly this is the only eaton - corporate diff I ever took apart and the gears were shot... but the locker was good.....I guess I would part it ... bring me a rustfree Alberta Cab when you some get it..lol. Can ship pieces probably also... but busy I am,I am said Sam.

I guess it could be a rolling frame.... no tires on it but I have some. Its sitting on wooden blocks now. Has PS box and brake lines were not cut. It a sweet frame actually... best I have. Has coil overloaders also.
