Body-Chassis Ground Strap: Where to where?

If I am getting this right, it goes from a bolt that's on the firewall, to a bolt that's on the passenger side frame rail, next to the motor. Am I correct?
I'm having some strange electrical issue's and the only thing I can think is this ground needs to be added, and I'll be set. (Dim headlights, all my electrical guages slightly wig out when I turn my headlights on.)
Also, what guage wire should I use, or is there a SPECIAL wire for this?

Tim,

I've not seen a frame-chassis ground strap. I've got a strap on the passenger side firewall that goes to the passenger side head, the main ground wire which fastens to the front of the passenger side head, and the small wire that splits from the negative cable at the battery and is fastened on the passenger side where the radiator support meets the quarter. This is where most of your circuits return to ground, and it's usually good and rusty.

Try clipping the negative lead on your multimeter to the head and probing around with the positive side, measuring resistance. Really good connections will measure less than an Ohm. More than a couple of Ohms, you should take the connection apart and check for rust or grease.

P.S. I'll double-check the frame ground, but I don't think there is one.

I have one which goes from the rad support to the frame. The main ground to the engine, and a heavy braided one I added from the engine to the frame. Of course the one from the head to the firewall. TIM, you can never have to many grounds, best placement for me is one where the wire is out of the way so it won't be damaged while working under the hood, and looks cleaner when looking under the hood.

That's the same as on my Suburban. The body mount bolts generally provide the ground. The engine needs the ground strap due to the rubber motor and tranny mounts, etc.

Factory the trucks come with one from the firewall to the back of the head and one from the cab floor to the frame and the engine battery..


Ive got an 85 That i put alot of grounds on for Cb radio I Had a bunch on it one from engine to frame frame to battery cab to frame bed to frame hood to cab antenna mount to frame Total of like 8 it really helped alot of stuff work better other than the cb junk.

It seemed to make my dash lights brighter didnt have any more flickers its really worth it just be sure to prep the area where your putting a strap by removing paint with 40 grit or a small die grinder with a roloc disc. and when you get the strap on put some silocone on the outside so the connection doesnt corrode.
