Seatbelts?
Does anybody have info about whether or not shoulder belts were a option or standard on the 72 chevy pickups? I really need this in writing or brochure pictures for evidence to show local police. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't have proof, sorry, and I'm not sure if they were an option then - but I kinda doubt it. I know for a fact they were not standard, although of course lap belts were. Good luck!

I looked in the 72 truck brochure and it mentioned nothing about seat belts, not a major selling point in '72 I guess. The owners manual however mentions lap and shoulder belts. Shoulder belts were definitely not standard in '72. Most trucks came with the provisions to mount them, ie: anchor nut in upper cab, but were blanked off with a small plastic cap. Wanted to get you something in writing , sorry, and good luck.

seat belts....
for your info on seat belts.....being from missourri, i checked with local hwy ptrl, 67 and back, no seat belts were required, so no ticket will be given, but 68 and up, lap belts were installed and they were required were to be worn.....so if it didnt come with shoulder straps, you shouldnt have anything to worry about......just wear the lap belt and be safe!!

Lap belt standard, shoulder harness optional. This continued untill at least 74.
Who has the number for the chevy resto packet? I don't have 1972, but in proor years, the shoulder belt option is option number A 85. Ask your local police if they require all older vehicle owners to prove that they are innocent. Isn't it there job to know safety laws? sorry, it just p!sses me off when we are told that we have to prove what older vehicles were equipped with as standard, when they are the ones supposed to know where to get this info. If it wasn't for places like this board, you'd be screwed and forced to install a later model seat belt which is in fact against federal law. :O |

I do not have it in official gov print but I know the Feds made it mandatory for the auto mfgs to put in the anchors for the shoulder harness in 1972. It was being done some models before '72, our year trucks as an example. However, it was not mandatory for the shoulder harness itself until 1974.
You might try contacting the NHTSA. There is an e-mail link at the bottom of their web-site. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/toc.html

Thank you for all your help. I really like this board and I would be lost without it sometimes too. Thanks again.

My '72 is completely original and does not have a shoulder belt. It was definitely an option. The plugs are still in the holes for mounting them on mine.
Been thinking about adding them...

I think the girl on the board that has the Burb has them as an option. My try to find her as I think she has a pic of the option sheet with it on it.
