Install GMC letters or not?
I bought my 72 about 4 months ago and have done a lot of serious work on the thing. About $2500 I've put into a truck I paid $500 for. I just got the hood and cowl painted last weekend. The truck used to have the original GMC hood letters on it, but the hood was junk so I picked up a good one and the local yard and painted it. It has no holes for the GMC letters which I have already purchased. Should I drill holes in the hood and put in the new GMC letters or leave it the smooth look? I think I will have to remove the hood latch stud in order to do so. Anyone ever done this? I am not sure if I want to drill the holes or not. Everyone's input is welcome. I will try to post a pic tomorrow. Thanks!!

I like original stuff ...
Nice looking truck -- but I'd drill the holes & install the letters. Just my 2 cents.

What kind of shape are the letters in? IF they are in good shape, put them on there. If you decide not to, let me know how much you want for them.

The letters are brand new and still in the package. I purchased them from Chevy Duty about a month ago. I will try to get some updated pics on my web page tonight. Thanks for the input!! But, I am still undecided.

I say install them. You wouldn't want a dumb ricer wondering what kind of truck you are whipping him with.

I drilled my used Chevy hood for the letters, and installed a new set. Best done using a template made from the old hood. Kinda hard to get to the hardware through the holes though. It's a matter of opinion on whether you install them or not, I like the original emblems on my truck.

Yeah, that's another thing, I don't have a template or know the measurments on the spacing of the letters. I know the "M" goes in the middle but is it centered from top to bottom as well? How much space is between each letter?

Long 1/4" drive extension with a swivel worked well for me, but still a pain.

I think it depends on how your doing the truck, if its lowered with 20's leave them off if its stock put them back on, speaking from a guy who's scratched his share of paint, I'd mask the front of your hood before you drill

Well here it is. I just put them on. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.

The paint is suppose to be the original Dark Olive. I'm not sure exactly how close of a match it is. My friend and I painted the hood and cowl last weekend. So the rest of the truck has the old paint on it. I think that the paint on the tops of the fender, doors and bed is original. The bottom of the fenders, doors, and bed has definately been repainted. I will be putting in new rockers and finishing the paint job sometime.

I sold the rally's to a friend of mine that has a 75, or 77 or something like that. I sold them for $150. He got a hell of a deal. I wish I could have got more for them. But $150 looks better in my wallet than 4 rallys sitting in my garage.

Boy, we seem to be having a run of Dark Olive Green lately. I just put my hood letters on last week and mine is dark olive.

Good looking combination on the paint....
That's the first one with that combination I've seen. Since you had the emblems on the front fenders, I think it was a good idea to put the others on...
