Tilt column

I want to put a tilt column in my Cheyenne Super. I heard on another post that they were all black originally is that true? So my blue interior ttruck would have had a black wheel and black column fron the factory?

yes, you could get a tilt column in any color as long as it was black.

So will the tilt always have a black wheel? How about the dash color?

Broken

Sorry, I broke the tip off the shifter and it jamed inside the column---I think...but, it doesn't go through all the shift positions now...so I give up.
I will send it off as a core and have it completely rebuilt.

hotrodtroy, that was one of the reasons a truck mag article author mentioned installing a van tilt. He could install it closer to the dash to clear their "coffee cups" or was it their big bellies. (I am going to guess that if you compress or shorten the intermediate shaft you could move any column forward a little bit more.)

I thought they were all black myself. But look what I found in this 1970 dealer brochure. This also answers the myth that tilts were available in 1970.

My 72 custom delux has a factory tilt in it. The truck is green, the interior is parchment and the column and wheel is black...

robby,
My 72 Cheyenne Super came with an original tilt. They only came in black. As posted above
You could paint it any color youlike however.

Chuck and Darren-Thanks for the real advice. It makes the swap a lot easier! While I have you both: I have the original 402 in the Cheyenne, But have a 454 to put in it. Should I keep the original in case another person might want it if I ever sell the truck? How big of a deal is the original engine? I plan on keeping the truck and could use the money from selling the 402. Thoughts?

If you ever do sell the truck the original engine would add to the value. I'm not sure how much though. I have no way of getting the original small block engine for mine so I went with a bigblock. I guess it's all in what you want...
