Tranny Wont Shift
Ok heres whats happenning. 68 1/2 ton with a 350 motor and 400 turbo tranny. The tranny will not shift out of 1st. To make it shift you have to take it out of drive put it in 2nd then back into drive and from then it will shift fine from there as long as you dont put it in park again. I have changed the fluid, metal vac lines and the rubber line that comes from the modulator. Is there anything else that I could look at it?
Thanks |

VALVE BODY
Sounds to me like you have some foreign material in the valve body. It could be something as small as a piecde of lint from a shop rag. Drain the fluid, drop the pan, remove the valve body & soak it in lacquer thinner. Blow out all the passages & reinstall.

probably is something in v/b if mod is new, also make sure there is no leaks in vac line to mod, maybe new but could still be leaking a little

My 400 quite shifting
And it was the little plastic gear on the governor that broke. $8 at the local tranny shop for the part and it was back going. It is pretty easy to pull the cover off and check the governor, but it is a pain when the fluid runs out the hole. LOL

That would be the governor cover. Just remove that cover and the governor will be able to be pulled out (with a slight twist) and inspected. Make sure your drain pan is handy, or do it in someone elses yard. LOL The governor has flyweights also that should move very freely. The plastic gear has been known to wear or break. post a pic of the governor and I'll inspect it for you.

Sounds good. I can do this tomorrow. How much fluid can I expect to come out from the governor?

It is a mess. I have syphoned out fluid out of the dipstick tube in the past. It seemed to work pretty good. I assume you do not have a drain plug in your pan?

Ok cool. Then the little bucket will do If this and another modulaor swap dont fix it then I guess its time to bit the bullet $$ and go to the tranny man down the road. Once I get my hands on a new governor I will swap it out and let you know how it went.

You may just need the gear replaced on your governor.
that would be cheaper.

Unfortunately due to time constraints I have not had a chance since I originally posted to take it in. Two kids will do that to ya. But they are worth it. I am hoping to take it down the weekend of the 19th or the 26th unless something else comes up. I will post back once I have something.
Thanks |
