broken ring gear!!! questions
i have a 71 K-10, with the normal 12 bolt rear...and yesterday i notice a hole in the rear end cover, leaking fluid. so i thake it off and some teeth are in the bottom of the case.
so i need new gears. on the ring gear it says 3817779- 14:43 GM 8-68 so im thinking it has 3.07 gears. but i was told 4x4's have 3.73's either way, any tips/advice wopuld be great for when i go to change the gears i was going to order the gear set and a pinion bearing. what else do i need? thanks, zach |

If you can afford it I would go get new gears for your rear-end. Used gears in your front axle wouldn't be too bad, unless its full-time. But if you get used gears you'll be running the risk of them making noise, but as long as your willing to take that chance its cool.

well, wheres the best place to buy them?
summit only has 3,73's and up. eventully i want a lift, big tires, and diffrent gears and posi axles...but right now i cant afford them. and what if i find some gears that come from a running truck in good shape, where they want to replace them with 4.11's or somthing, would that be good if i know there in good shape? thanks, zach |

if you are planning to go to BIG tires then change to a lower gears front and rear. You will not like what the tall gears and tall tires will do to the performance. It will not come out of the hole worth a darn and it transfers too much load to the transmission. Ask me how I know.

i bet you could buy a whole used rear axle assembly cheaper than you could get the gears. Heck someone gave me a whole truck minus the engine and tranny. Most rear gears seem to last a long timer...at least for me. I have never had to change a gear set due to damage. That way you don't have to worry about setting the lash and depth on the new gears.

well, you have a good point, but it seems like now is the time to go ahead and replace the gears with some good ones that will hold up, i will be trailoring my nova to the track almost weekly this summer, and i want to know that the rear end/trans is in good shape.
i would much rather spend the 2-250$ and redo it with new gears. ive realized i dont really want a big 4x4 anyway, the 31's are plenty big for my daily driver, and i'd rather spend the money on cab corners/rockers, and the body in general. sooo, i just want new 3.07's and MAYYYBE a posi unit if i can find a cheap one. so does anyone know where to find new 3.07 ring and pinion set? |

I bought front (Dana 44) and rear (GM 12 bolt) Yukon gear sets for my 68 K10 from Randy's Ring and Pinion (www.ring-pinion.com).
Not sure if they're still the lowest price out there for Yukon gear sets? Also bought an Eaton posi from them for the rear. There is quite a difference between on-line prices. Sweet burnin' those tires in the summer but is a bit more squirrely in the winter when just running two wheel. Oh yah, these guys also stock the "good" Timken bearings. Here's a nice link on rebuilding differentials too... www.off-road.com/chevy/tech/gears/ |

update,
i called richmond gears...they say there is no such thigng as 3.07's there retarted then they say 3.08's will be fine, but i want to go with 3.07's, thats what came out, so i figure why not put 3.07's back in. i just want to be safe, and ive never dealt with much rear end stuff, so i decided that was the way to go. so i go to one of three auto parts stores in town, they cant get 3.07's, just 3.08's so i got to the next store, they clain they can get 3.07's, but there 256.00$$$!!! so i say what the hell and i order them, and then a week later they call me up and i go get them, but the idiot had 40:13 instead of 43:14 so i said screw it and now im gonna just get a whole rear end. SOOO basicly, lots of people think there is no 3.07 ratio, and im still without geras! |

It is 3.08, the same thing that I have for the moment.
I am thinking about going to 3.42's, so then I might sell my 3.08's. They are 2 months old.
