Manual 4 speed overdrives????

Can someone give me the details of this trans? I here they were used in the diesel trucks of the early 80's. Is it a sm465 with a overdrive 4th gear ratio or somthing different? Are the a top loader or shift rods on the outside and last but not, are they available in 4x4 versions with the 205 case? Thanks for any info.

In a word, they were garbage as far as a 4x4 application goes. (all apps if you ask me) They didn't come in 4x4's.

I thought mine was an SM465, it's a 4-speed going, L-1-2-3-R?

Matt, with the L, yours is a SM465. The A833 wasn't that popular. We are talking about the 3speed with OD (4 forward with 4th being OD)

actually they were made by New Process, which was (is?) a division of Chrysler...who also made the NP205 transfer case and NP435 transmission, both good strong pieces of equipment, just in case you thought New Process (as a division of Chrysler) couldn't make anything of quality.

Here is an interesting article on the NP-A883. According to this, the tranny came in both GM and Dodge trucks and vans, and was used in 4x4 applications (I don't know about that, though). There were aluminum and cast iron case versions.

Also, these came from the factory behind hemi-equipped cars...if there is any question of their strength...and board member stelth2002 swapped one into his truck behind a hot 292, if you have any more questions PM him.

The OD 833's never came behind a hemi. It was introduced in 1975 when hp was WAY down and the rating on them isn't that strong. (especially for a 4x4 app.) They were more used in Dodge trucks and that is where the reputation of breaking came from. Typically I have only seen them behind 305's and Diesels for the GM trucks, and they were 2WD.
