Blazer tank questions

My son & I are going to put a blazer tank in his 72 swb with the sidemarker gas fill. I was looking @ the rear crossmember & thought about welding a plate to box it in for strength.(thinking rear end crash) Good idea or overkill? A thought on the sidemarker door, if you run the light wire through 1/4" plastic airline & shrink wrap @ the light, it will seal it from sparks.

I bought a plastic blazer tank and was not pleased at all. I'm going to order an aluminum tank from Triangle Engineering.
