Question 700R4 with NP205?

Who can help with the necessary info to be able to adapt a 700R4 to a 205 transfer case in a 72 K20?? Need to know if the output shaft on the 700R4 needs to change, if any adapters are needed, and so forth??

You need the Advance Adapters shorter main shaft or I have heard that someone makes a spacer plate to make up for the longer original shaft. Also, the 205 needs to be the one that fits the TH350 trans due to spline count differences.

This is great info, Thanks!! So let's see if I understand, Advance Adapters can supply me with either the proper output shaft for my 700R4 to fit a T350 ready NP205 transfer case, or they can sell me the Adapter itself to mate up a T350 ready NP205 transfer case to my stock 700R4, right??

If I was to use the adapter only and my 700R4, this would probably require sliding the crossmember back and changing the driveshaft lengths, front and rear, right??

Let me know if I'm on the right track here guys, and thanks for your help, this is good stuff!!

I'm not sure if A/A is selling that spacer when I did mine they were not. There was someone out of Texas selling them. You mite try Coloradok5.com someone over there mite have the info.
If you were to use just the spacer you would have to move the crossmember back I think it was...
When I did mine the biggest pain was the four bolts on the back of the tranny trying to find metric studs or all thread on a weekend was not easy lol

If you were to cut off the 2+ inches I think you would loose the splines on the output shaft.

The spacer is 2+ inches thick and with that you still have to grind about 1/8 off each shaft so they will not bind up if you forget to grind the shafts you will not get the two parts to seal. let alone have the bindding problem.
The other way is to get the short shaft from A/A

do not cut the splines this does not work i just did this tonight and basically screwed up the whole process now i have to find another output shaft and geut the spacer the spacer seems like the way to go to me it looks like the front drive shaft will hit the trans pan if you use the shorter output shaft

sorry for your troubles, but I think we can all learn from the experience. How difficult is it to replace the output shaft on a 700R4 vs. adding the spacer?? Is it true that the shaft is about $153.00 vs. $450.00 for the spacer?? Maybe I read the price for the wrong part, let me know please.

a while back the spacer was only 75$ or so. To change the output shaft you have to tear down the tranny, Unless you plan on a rebuild the spacer is a better way IMO.
In some of those pic's you can see how close my driveshaft came to the pan. I had a deep pan on as well it cleared but it was close.

where did you get your spacer from do you have a phone number or website other than advane adaptors i need to get one of these as soon as possible and would like to have a couple of options available if i could i need to be able to move this truck in the next week

I wish I had a answer you guys. But the only one I have is to go on www.coloradok5.com
And ask those guys. It has been almost two since I did my swap. And I got most of my setup from another member of CK5.
But when I get home tonight I'll look around just the same, I would like to have the info as well.

Whats the advantage of using the 205 behind the 700 other than the cast iron casing and no chain? Does it give a better 4wd gear ratio? Wouldn't that give a longer tranny? having to shorten the rear and lengthen the front drive shafts? Making a bad angle in the rear.

a 205 is just stronger having a shorter rear and longer front isntbad most guys that run dubblers in their k5 trail rigs try to have the same linght drive thaft for front and back then all you need is one spair or if you break the rear you can use the one from the front to get you home.

With just the 2" spacer installed, do you still need to shorten the rear and lengthen the front driveshaft?

I bought one!

I just ordered the part (# 7Q35A) from A and Reds yesterday. I spoke with Bob and then to Richard at their "techline"and both informed me that the part is made for a 700r4 to 350 conversion, not the other way around . We discussed the issue ( I mentioned this thread ) and determined that it could be used either way. It was $60 and I will let you know.....just in case it does not work . I have been looking for this adaptor for quite some time. I will take pics of the part and install, and maybe we can add it to the FAQ list.

i ordered mine on monday and got it wednesday we put the tranny and everything in last night everything bolted up good and fit nice but we ran into one major issue make sure that you grind enough off both shafts or you'll run into problems like i did i tightened up the t case and cracked the stock adaptor so now i need to find a adaptor asap if anybody has one they want to get rid of let me know i need to get my truck moved by dec 1st
