What's the best cure for a starter that cranks slow when the engine's hot? Heatshield, replace starter, or both? This starter bolts into the bell housing instead of up into the block. I have 2 of the newer starters but would have to replace the bell housing to use them.

I had the same problem... bought a mini starter and the problem went away!

sounds like the engine itself may be getting hot. That will impede starter from functioning properly.

I had the same problem replaced the battery, no change , replaced the starter problem gone works great hot or cold

Your starter is going out from exsesive heat.
Replace the starter with a new one, and get a heat shield for it.
A mini starter would be nice, but not needed.
If you don't install a heat shield, the starter will last about 5 or so years in a daily driver with normal (8 to 1) compression and headers. If you get one with a life time waranty, then so be it. They'll replace it when it goes bad.
Sometimes, you get lucky and have one last a long time in these conditions. Sometimes they only last a year.
Myself, I just got an auto zone rebuilt starter, ran it for 4 years, and it was starting to slow down just a little bit.

There is also a chance that your timing is advanced too much. Inplug the coil next time you try to start it hot and see if it still cranks slow. If so, get a starter. If it cranks over fine with the coil unplugged, then time to look into the tist for sticking weights or at least check the timing.

Thanks everyone for the replies Cheapest I see a starter is $50. I can rebuild it for a lot less than that. Will also run up to Summit and pick up a heat shield. Was hoping I wouldn't have to pull the starter. Have to work outside and it's supposed to be cold the next few days. I don't think it's the timeing. Set at 10 degrees advance.
