Glove box sticker? Rear end ratio?

Maybe someone can help me out on this. The above sticker (from another thread) shows RPO codes as I am used to seeing them. I want to know what the rear end ratio is in my '72 without taking off the cover, but it isn't listed on my sticker. And the numbers are different, like it says "1N4010" for power steering and "1LS910" for 350 CID V-8 engine etc... What's the deal with these numbers being different? And where can I find out what rear end is supposed to be in it?

Here is my sticker, sorry for the weird angle - the flash was causing a glare.

Some trucks have the extra three characters on the RPO codes, not sure why. If the truck came with the standard axle ratio in these years, it is not listed on the sticker. Standard ratio for a half ton with a 350 is 3.07, so that is what your truck came with.

Why not drain the oil and look...the oil is practicly worthless after 20 years.

The sticker numbers as stated before are actually the same except of course the extra three numbers I think that the extra three depended more on the factory than the anything else- maybe they thought the "encoded" options looked cool. The optional 3.73 gear was nt listed on a 1972 Cheyenne w/350 and three speed I had in high school. Drain it and check what is $15 for new oil and a gasket? Maybe you can avoid the problem the high school truck had- shelling ring gear bolts talk about leaving a neat hole in the rear end housing- no not the cover, the hogs head- cool sounds like that don't happen every day. To be 16 and ignorant again....

Thanks for all of the information. I guess I should change the oil anyway, as you said it probably needs it.

There should be a code stamped on your rear axle facing the front of your truck near the top. Some are near the pumpkin and some are near the hub. You may need to do some wire brushing. Go to this web page to look up the codes: http://www.gmcpauls.com/67-72_chevy.htm There should be two letters, which are the code, and several numbers. The numbers are simply the date the rear-end was made. Also, typically, if your truck was a manual it has a 3.73, if it was an auto it was most likely a 3.07, that's not all trucks....just typical. Good luck!

Forgot to mention that it should be on the passenger side axle tubing
