I just about finished building my english wheel tonight. I've been wanting to get one for a while now, but couldn't justify the cost. For what I wanted, that was anywhere between $500 to $1000. So, that alternative was to build one. I have about $160 in this one, and from what little I played with it tonight, I think I will work great. It is about 72" overall heigth, and about 40" to the pinch point. Throat depth is 22".

I still need to clean up a few welds, make the adjustment wheel for the threaded rod, put the casters on the legs, and then paint it. Not sure exactly what I'm gonna do with it in the future, but it will be fun to play with and learn how to use it. And, it was fairly cheap!

thats awesome, ive thought about doing the same thing, where did you get the wheel itself?

The upper wheel is a heavy duty cast iron caster from Graingers. Cost was $45. The lower anvil I got off of eBay for about $50 shipped. I used some 3/4" CCR for the axle, turned it down to fit the bearing that came with the anvil, the heated & quenched it.

I'll buy a real upper wheel later on, they are kinda pricey. But this on will work for now.

Yeah, I actually just found that site a couple weeks ago. I found a guy close to me (he is in Boulder), and we are planning a one-day get togther at my shop in March. Should be cool!! There will be sheetmatal shaping tools of all kinds here, and we will be learning about all the different tools, how to use them, and the best tool(s) for a certain job. It ought to be a blast!!

I wouldn't call it talent.....the nice thing about metal is, if you screw it up the first time, you can always cut it / bend it / grind it / reweld it until it looks nice!!

Mostly reproducing body panels with 3D curves like hoods, door panels, deck lids, also making motorcycle tanks and fenders. And about anything that you want to out of sheet metal
