I thought it had the makings of a cool mod. It was $4 when I saw it the other day. I called Speedway Motors where he purchased it new and talked to one of their tech guys about my possible plans for it and was satisfied with what I heard. I checked the price new and it was $29.99. i thought it would be good if I could pick this up for around $10 or so. Well you can see with 10 minutes to go in the auction it is $28. The auction just ended at $38.20. Thats not including shipping!!!! This guy bought a part, installed it but didn't use it and made almost $10 off it!!! If you look at the larger picture you can see what looks to me like rust around the pull knob shaft!!! Incredible.........

it happens all the time. thats one of the many, and i do mean many reasons why ebay is sometimes called evilbay.

i sold some autometer gauges awhile back, and these guys were giving me $2 or $3 more than the price new for them ebay is a sellers friend, not a buyers.

I know what you mean. Ebay is an auction, and like any auction, people tend to get caught up in the emotion and forget their common sense.
Last year for example, I picked up a fairly decent 18 horse riding lawnmower at a local auction for $300 because it was running a little rough.
I took it home, cleaned it up, replaced the battery and overhauled the carb and put it on Ebay. It sold for $1700. Go figure? I could quit my job if I could find enough deals like that.

I used to go to auctions all the time. People go nuts, & don't know what things are worth & end up paying more than retail price for used stuff. Last summer I saw someone pay $350 for a computer box. No info on what it had been or if it even worked. 1/2 the room was shaking their heads but the guy had a big grin on his face and thought he got a good deal. After all it said " Hewlit Packard" on the front, & he heard they made good computers. Probably a 486 8 megs.

I don't know why any one would call it "evil bay". It's not ebay that is dumb enough to bid on something more than what it would cost new. Like I always say " Something is only worth what someone is WILLING to pay"!

You can save some major bucks buying on ebay. It's always worth a look depending on what you need.

Just like anything else you buy, it pays to do your homework first. I've got parts catalogs where one company wants $59.95 for an item and another wants $89.95 for the exact same thing. Real easy to get screwed in this world. Shop around...

Don't you hate it when an item goes up to almost what it is new...to heck with that I just buy it new and get the warranty along with it. People are gullible and uninformed.

Barret-Jackson has given people some pretty unrealistic expectations of what some older cars are worth too. They see a car "exactly" like what there trying to sell and think they can retire on the proceeds from some bagged out rust bucket. But then there is indeed a sucker born every minute.

Based on the value of some of the things sold on Barrett Jackson, my rustbucket primered truck must be worth 5K. Actually sometimes it kills me to watch Barrett Jackson because I see the muscle cars that I really like and know I'd have to sell my house to be able to afford them.

That's because the guys that can afford the $900.00 BOLT are paying the incredibly stupid prices for a ^#&^% Chevy, Ford, or Dodge!!!

These are everyday, assembly-line built cars, not works of art. That's why I quit doing musclecars and started playing with/selling older cars and trucks. But, lo, the prices on the '67-'72 Chevy trucks is beginning to suffer the musclecar price syndrome, as well!

Nothing good stays affordable.

My only successes on Ebay? Here is my buyers secret. Shhh.

The only time I attempt to bid and go for an item I want is when it is listed improperly, without pictures OR with a bad description. THAT my friends is where you find the deals.

I have had such amazing luck finding a guy that listed a carb under passenger vehicles, or shocks under wheels/tires, or a great item without a picture (just email them, and they will usually send you pics anyways.)

I believe the real point here is that e-bay IS an auction, not something priced at a store or at a show. I have been in the auction business,as a floor man for 2 years and as an auctioneer for the past 12 years. The majority of stuff sold brings more than "book" or sometimes "new" prices because of the competition of the bidding process."I want it and I can afford it so THEY are not going to get it". Without this attitude auctions could do away with the middle man and you would have a swap meet.
I have sold on e-bay since somewhere around 98 and everything I have sold on there was bought at a local auction and brought at least twice as much and sometimes much more. E-bay exposes your item to hundreds of thousands of people instead of a hundred. And with that many people fighting for your item "I've got to have it no matter what" makes me smile.
