Quick question... how much would a shop charge to change a rear main seal in a 82 2 wd blazer? It's leaking like crazy, and my house is sold, need to be out in a couple of weeks and I have NO time to change it. Any ideas?

several hundred would be my guess. the part is cheap but since they are going to have to pull the motor or tranny they are gonn stick it to you bad for labor

They shouldn't have to pull the motor. You have a two piece rear seal, so it can be changed by dropping the pan and driving the old seal out....

wans't even thinking, if you still have an early model block with 2 piece seal they don't HAVE to pull the tranny, but it is a pita to do with everything in there and they are still gonna hit you for some serious cash

The only real benefit to pulling the motor, is you have everything at standing level (on an engine stand). A 2 piece rear main is VERY simple to do with the engine "in situ". I have done many of them in small block pickups, and have never taken longer than 3 hrs, start to finish.

I just had mine done like 8 months ago on the 81 it was like 350 the guy knew me and gave me like 2 hours of labor off so i got a deal though.
the 81 had a one peice main seal. so i think that yours is as well

Does it have a later model motor? Early 80's small blocks had two piece seals....

2 piece . that's the only way an 82 would come. unless the motor has been swapped out. I would think they are going to charge you about 3 hrs labor I cannot see more than $250.00 for that job.
If you were close i would do for ya.

I just had 2 quotes on my '85, $210 and $275. I sent it in, and it was actually the rear of the intake and a valve cover were leaking. They had to use dye to find the actual leaks because it was so bad

I've had a couple of quotes on having mine changed on my 76 GMC and it was going to be less than $200.

thanks for all the input. actually, its a gm goodwrench that I put in about a year ago. I was wondering why it would be leaking since the engine still has just a few thousand miles but I remember that I sat for a while before I installed it so it probably dried out. I think the goodwrench engines still have a 2 piece. I may be able to wait until I have another garage.

I've put a goodwrench engine in mine back in '95 got tired of changeing the valve cover gaskets once a year. Put a set of edelbrock cast aluminum covers on in '02 have'nt had a leak since.Plus they look good. The stock covers are terrible even with bigger load speaders.

the engine it was an 88. sorry about that. yea the egine was an 88 sorry i didnt have then engine in long after i bought that truck. sorry again.
