Bumper ideas

I have a 79 GMC that the rear bumper is a little rough on, oh ok a lot rough on. I want to build my own bumper, but I don't know exactly what I want it to look like. If any of you have ever built one I would love to see pics. I am going to be doing some 4-wheeling so I need a bumper that will hold up. Not a show bumper just one to serve its purpose. Or if any of you have any aftermarket bumpers or ones you have made that you would like to sell I would love to hear from you. Thanks
Matthew

Here is mine, nothing more than a big ugly piece of pipe. The ends are angled in some and it has a tab on it for a clevis. I can get better pics of it if you want. Strong, easy, and cheap.

I've seen a lot of old 4x4's (80's and earlier) with chassis flex like in the above picture. Is that kind of flex bad for the truck? Can it hurt the body and/or chassis or are these trucks meant to flex under load like the big-rigs? (18 wheelers)

Mine flexes pritty good as far as chasis twist an such, mebbe its just the angle of that pic.....but it looked pritty wild to me.

My body lines tweak a lil, an mebbe they would twist a lil more if I took the sway bar off....but his just seems a little more radical than mine....

Yeah, GM made the 73-8? frames a little too weak. Hence the steering box frame weld-in supports that have been available to stop the box from cracking the frame or even ripping off under stress with fairly large tires (33"-up). The frame should flex some, of course, as all ladder frames do.

I'd like to see some pics of 4x4-worthy rear bumpers, too please.

I hear big-rigs have open-C frames (instead of boxed) so they can flex and not crack under load. Has anyone "boxed" a pickups frame before? Can it cause the frame to crack?

mine is made out of some junior c-channel, I think. It was the front bumper that came on my truck that I changed to the rear when I made a new front. It is like a junior c-hannel with a few more inched of plate on the bottom. 3/8 thick and tree, building, car, ect ect proof. The front bumper is definitaly 10 junior channel

Here's a pic of the step part if mine. The outsides are 3/16 wall 4x6 tubing and the center is 1/2in plate.
It still needs a bunch of grinding and smoothing and paint and... !
