I've got a Compaq Presario 1700T, Pentium III, 256, 30G, with cd/dvd/rw and floppy drives, and 2000 professional operating system. I was told the main PCB board is bad from the power connector that plugs in the back causing a short.

DT - I don't want you to think I've forgotten about you ---- It just took a little while to dig up a maintenance manual for a Compaq laptop similar to yours. Luckily, I have a lot of resources

Your hard drive is easy to remove; I couldn't find a real maintenance guide for your specific machine, but I did find one for the 1700XL series laptop, which is basically the same case/machine.

For a diagram of how to remove your laptop hard drive, Please visit the following link:

http://www.compaq.com/athome/support...ch7removal.pdf

Look at page 10 of that the pdf file.

You should see this image. It shows exactly how to remove the container with your hard drive:

You will basically slide out this container/bracket after unscrewing it, then there will probably be four screws on the underneath which hold the actual drive in. There may be an adapter of some sort attached the back of the drive. It make take some gentle force to remove this thing. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO DROP OR JAR IT ABRUPTLY!!! Remove it on top of a rubber mat or something. Don't remove over a carpeted floor (static electricity risk) or a tile floor (impact risk if you drop it).

Once the drive is removed, if you get the 2.5" case from CompUSA, you should be able to install it without a problem. If you do have problems, give me a holler, take a digital picture of the problem if you can and I'll be happy to help out!!

P.S. - I would print out a copy of the maintenace guide if you want to fix your computer. I think you can get a new motherboard from eBay for this machine. Working on computers isn't too hard, not as easy as an old GM truck, but ...

Good luck. Promise me you'll post those pics once you get this beast working. It's a fun little project to get going and only costs ~ $30. You get to salvage your data also!

(Be sure to back everything up to CD or DVD once you get the portable drive hooked up!!!)

Wow! that's awesum. I'll get the case at Circuit City this weekend. Thanks for the help.

Jim, if you want to, send pics of the whole bed (in and out), I may also be interested in the bed sides as well as the steps. Sean, let me know what you want to do as well (I guess we both PMed Jim about the bed).

Sean, need comes before greed. I have 2 complete beds (one on the truck and one spare). The spare needs a lot of work, but not needed right now. You have first stab at Jim's bed when he gets it.

You guys aren't going to hug are you? Brought a tear to my eye!

Don, I like the looks of the bed without the steps.

It's different, isn't it? I've got a perfect set of steps and supports that need paint. and I have a set that will be a challenge to an experienced metal smith
