Glovebox/CD player Installed *Pics*

Well not many commented on the glovebox I had made. I am very happy with the way the box turned out. Here are some pictures of everything installed. It wasnt as cheap as just cutting a hole in the dash but in 30 mins I could have the truck back to stock

P.S. Yes, I know I forgot to connect the drivers side vent hose back up. While I had everything torn out I cleaned and wiped down all the duct and the inside of the unit that hangs down below the dash.

That was one of the requirements of the cd player. I bought one with a remote.

Looks very nice, I'm going the same route (glovebox), just waiting for the head unit to arrive in the mail. I still am undecided on where the speakers are going though.

What size speakers did you get? I have (2) 4" Alpines in a custom wood bracket I made that fit perfectly into the spot that the stock 4 x 10 came out of. Keeping with the theme of not cutting the truck up, I plan to try and fabricate some type of box that will fit down near the bottom of the floor shifter.

You stole my idea! I've wanted to do that along with put a bunch of extra guages, torque converter lockup control, data aquisition link (way down the road). What did you make that box out of? Did the radio have clearance problems with A/C box? Same as you again I want to put the speakers down on the floor so I don't cut up the cab. I'd like to see some pics if/when you get started on that.

I am stealing the idea to install an infrared repeater from another board member. From what I understand it has to have power or something but its a very then LED wire that can run from outside the glovebox to inside the glovebox so I can use the remote with the glovebox door closed. I really have no clue what I am talking about, just the theory or concept of the idea. Will get more information on the subject in the near future.

man that looks good super clean!! any reason you chose right hand corner of glove box? most of the ones i've seen are in the middle. are you going to mount any thing else next to it? do you have any pictures of speaker bracket you made.

The box was made out of 20 gauge galvanized steel. The reason the cd player is shoved way over on the passanger side of the glovebox is because of the riser that comes off the A/C box. The glovebox is 2 1/2 inches deep. The cd player is around 6 1/2 inches long. There is around 1/4 inch to 1/2 space above the a/c box and the same amount below the slant of the firewall.

I was actually looking this evening and I might attempt to make a bracket that is slighty below and setback from the face of the dash, that would hold (2) 6 1/2 speakers. I like making things out of wood! hah, my grandpa was a woodshop teacher for years and years. He has an airconditioned wood working shop that is about the size of my house.

The reason I placed the cd player in the right hand corner is because the cab has A/C and that takes up the whole left side behind the box. I couldnt even place cd player in the center from top to bottom because of the depth of the cd player would have hit the slant in the firewall. The only space in my glovebox area that would fit the cd player was the bottom right.

I still need to get the speakers, I'm looking at Pioneer's TS-D601P (6.5") & TS-D901P (6X9). How did you install the wood bracket for the 4" Alpines? Did you use the 2 factory bolt holes for the original speaker bracket and brace them in another spot also? The box idea (on the floor) is a good one. I've thought about installing 2 6.5" in the kick panels & 2 6 x 9's in the doors using baffles and dynamat but I gotta admit I'm pretty "chicken" about getting the jigsaw out (lol), I may go with pods (kickpanel)for the 6.5's and the box idea for the 6X9's (using fibreglass).

Do you think the radio would fit in the top left corner instead of the bottom right? I had my plans with gauges lined across the bottom and radio uptop for looks. Just curious.

I've never seen a a/c equipped truck's glove box to know how limited they are in size. Your setup looks real nice. Is there extra space that could be used to hold cd's in the glove box if the box you made was modified.

Nice install. I did the same to mine. Keep us posted on the IR repeater thing. Also, I found I had to install a little fan in the glovebox to keep the unit cool. I put an antennea splitter on so i could run cd receiver and stock am radio off same antennea.

I wanted the metal mounting bracket that held the wooden speaker bracket to be extremely heavy duty. I didnt want to have it jar loose and have to tear the glovebox and vent hoses back out to re-adjust the speakers. I probably went way to far over-board but I made a steel framed bracket out of 1/8" thick steel square 1/2" tubing. It uses the factory bolt slot for mounting and just barely squeezes in up behind the A/C vent above the stock radio and the factory mounting bracket that is mounted on the firewall.

Simple answer, No.

Overall the glovebox width is around 18 1/2". On an A/C truck the A/C riser eats up 7 inches from the drivers side of the glovebox towards the middle. That leaves you around 11" to work with. I dont know exact measurements from the top of the glovebox to the firewall but I would guess its around 5". My cd player is 6 1/2" deep so it would have no chance to fir in the top left corner. Maybe if you removed your glovebox door and built the glovebox more shallow than mine which was 2 1/2" you might be able to fit a cd player in the top left of a non-a/c cab. More than likely the cd player would have to stick out a little past the front of the dash to fit.

I thought of having a little cubby hole on the drivers side of the cd player inbetween it and the A/C hose but it all boiled down to money, time and looks. My cd player is around 7 1/2" wide, with the 1 5/8" I left on the passanger side of the cd player to match the 1 5/8" on the bottom of the cd player, you would have about 2-3 inches of space. You would have almost enough depth so that you could stand a couple of cd cases in the upright position in a small shelf in the glovebox. Also on top of the cd player, you could make a shelf that was around the same width as the cd player and be 2-3 inches high and be able to go back far enough you could probably store a couple of cd cases laying down.
